WISE, Va. – Two fourth quarter scores from UVa.-Wise was too much for the Concord University football team to overcome in the Mountain East Conference Game of the Week at Carl Smith Stadium Thursday night.
Trailing 16-12 in the late stages of the third quarter, the Cavaliers (4-2, 3-2 MEC) was forced to punt. Junior defensive back
Chaudlier Shepherd backed up to his own 17-yard line to field the boot and proceeded to race 83 yards for the go-ahead score to take a 19-16 lead on UVa.-Wise.
On the next drive for the Cavaliers, they were able to drive deep into Concord territory but missed a short field goal, allowing CU (2-4, 2-4 MEC) to keep the three-point margin. However, on the ensuing possession for the Mountain Lions a fumble gave UVa.-Wise a short field and this time it capitalized as quarterback Jeremy Eubank found James Cousins for a seven-yard touchdown to give UVa.-Wise a 23-19 lead with 9:59 remaining in the game.
Another Mountain Lions' fumble set UVa.-Wise up for the game's final score, a 37-yard scamper by Carlton Griffith.
Junior kicker
Zack Keaton got the scoring started for Concord as he nailed a 25-yard field goal on the game's opening drive, but that score was answered by UVa.-Wise three drives later as it marched 59 yards to take a 7-3 lead after the first quarter.
The Cavaliers got a defensive touchdown in the second quarter as Alvin Enahoro raced 49 yards on a fumble receover to extend the lead 14-3 for UVa.-Wise.
CU got two scores before halftime as senior quarterback
Brian Novak found junior wide receiver
Paul Jones for a 28-yard touchdown. But, the extra point never got up as a bad snap allowed UVa.-Wise to get two points, making it a 16-9 contest.
Right before the break, Keaton connected on a 26-yard field goal.
At halftime, the Mountain Lions trailed 16-12, and the score remained the same until Shepherd's punt return at the end of the third quarter.
Jones notched 85 receiving yards and Concord's only offensive touchdown on the night. Novak finished with 193 yards and one touchdown.
