WHEELING, W.Va- The Concord University men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Wheeling Jesuit in men's soccer action on Thursday evening.
Concord drops to 5-8 on the year (3-7 MEC), while Wheeling Jesuit improves to 5-8 this season (3-5 MEC).
The Mountain Lions looked to gain the lead early, as junior midfielder
Mahamadou Coulibaly saw his header flash wide of the goal at the 3:33 mark. CU managed to find several more chances in the first half, with sophomore defender
Xander Bailey firing a shot wide, and freshman forward
Sam Ashton knocking a header wide in the 34
th minute.
The two teams remained scoreless at halftime.
In the second half, junior midfielder
Max Simpson had a shot go over the bar in the 54
th minute, while freshman midfielder
Yacouba Issa Traore had his effort go wide left 12 minutes later.
However, it was the Cardinals who managed to open the scoring, as Jordan Frommeyer managed to fire a shot on the left side from an assist by Brent Pedlow in the 76
th minute.
The Mountain Lions looked to force overtime late in the 86
th minute, as
Max Simpson forced WJU goalkeeper Matt McCormick into a save. However, the Cardinals managed to hold onto the one goal lead after 90 minutes.
WJU outshot the Mountain Lions 18-7, with Simpson providing Concord's only shot on target.
Freshman goalkeeper
James Sinclair saved nine shots in the defeat.
Concord returns to Athens on Monday for a non-conference matchup against Shippensburg. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 P.M.
