Concord and Shepherd Finish in 1-1 Draw

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman forward Pilar Elias gave the Concord University women's soccer team the lead in the 16th minute, but Shepherd answered late off of a free kick as he Mountain Lions and the Rams shared the points with a 1-1 draw at the SU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.   
 
Concord's record goes to 2-1-2 on the season (1-1-1 MEC) , while Shepherd now stands at 1-1-2 (0-1-2 MEC)  
 
Concord and Shepherd combined for just seven shots in the first half of play with Elias giving Concord an early lead off of an assist by senior forward Kari Simon. The assist gives Simon a total of 10 points through the first five games of the season. Simon needs just five more points to tie Katie Cuviello for sixth all-time with 73 points for her career at Concord.
 
The second half of play saw a surge in the offensive output for both teams, as Concord registered six shots and Shepherd added 14 throughout the second period. Freshman goalkeeper Emily Simpkins continued her strong start to the season with nine saves throughout the match, but Shepherd managed to answer late off of a free kick by Shepherd's Lexi Vondrak in the 84th minute. 
 
Neither team could find a goal in the overtime periods, with Elias and junior forward Emily Cole forcing a save from Shepherd goalkeeper Kelsey Rhoderick. Simpkins also saved a shot on goal in overtime to preserve the tie for Concord.    
 
The goal for Elias was her third in two games while the Waterville, Maine native has also added an assist through five games this season.

Freshman defender/midfielder Tannis Jackson contributed three shots, and junior midfielder Margot Provencher had two shots.           
 
Overall, Concord was outshot 24-12 in total, and Shepherd also held the edge 10-3 in attempts on target.    
 
Concord will next host Urbana at home on September 17.  Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
