SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – A goal in the 66
th minute and outstanding goalkeeping from senior goalie
Mitchell Thompson helped the Concord University men's soccer team win its second straight game as it downed Shepherd 1-0 Sunday afternoon at the SU Soccer Complex in Mountain East Conference play.
CU improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in league competition. Meanwhile, the Rams fell to 0-4 and 0-3 in the MEC.
After just three shots in the first half, Concord began peppering the Shepherd goal in the second half as it recorded 10 shots and five shots on goal in the second half.
Sophomore midfielder
Mahamadou Coulibaly broke through for the Maroon and Gray with a goal in the 66
th minute to give CU a 1-0 edge. For Coulibaly, it was his first career goal for the Mountain Lions, and was assisted by sophomore forward
Maximillian Simpson.
Thompson stopped all four shots on goal that he faced during the match and has now gone 199 minutes without allowing a goal. Additionally, Thompson has saved 15 shots over that time.
The Mountain Lions outshot SU, 13-7, and also held advantages in shots on goal (6-4) and corner kicks (4-3).
Coulibaly and senior midfielder
Eduardo Filho each had two shots on goal for Concord while sophomore midfielders
Adam Carnwath and
Alex Rhodes each fired one chance on goal.
The Mountain Lions will host their first home game of the season when they welcome Urbana to Anderson Field 4:00 p.m. Thursday.
