BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team capitalized on three Notre Dame errors and sophomore pitcher
Zach Kelly pitched his third complete of the season as Concord beat NDC 6-2 at the Mountain East Conference Tournament Friday night at Linda K. Epling Stadium.
Kelly scattered eight hits over nine innings and surrendered just one earned run while striking out four batters to run his record to 7-4 this season.
As an offense, Concord scored runs in five different innings, first, third, fifth, seventh and eighth.
The first CU run was a product of senior outfielder
Jerrod Groves reaching on a fielder's choice and advancing to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Freshman outfielder
Andy Szamski brought Groves home on an RBI groundout.
Groves added an RBI single in the third as redshirt freshman infielder
Chad Frazier raced home from second to give CU a 2-1 lead.
The Mountain Lions added to its lead in the fifth on a run-scoring single from junior outfielder
Andrew Seigel, who notched his second straight three-hit game, plating junior infielder
Holt Cassada. Frazier also scored in the fifth on a double play.
Cassada came all the way around to score after singling to start the seventh as Notre Dame's center fielder Danny Beaver bobbled the ball allowing Cassada to score without any other hits in the frame.
Sophomore catcher
Paul Williams added to Concord's 5-2 cushion in the eighth as the Vinton, Virginia native stole third base and scored on an errant throw down to third.
Williams joined Seigel as CU players to have three-hit games. Concord's 1-4 hitters of Seigel, Groves, Szamski and Williams combined for eight of Concord's 10 hits, scored two runs and had all three Mountain Lion RBI.
Cassada and Frazier added two runs and a hit each.
The Mountain Lions will move into the winner's bracket final versus Shepherd at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Epling Stadium.
