WISE, Va. – The Concord University baseball team lost a pair of games to UVa.-Wise, 16-7 and 8-2, Sunday afternoon at Stallard Field in Mountain East Conference play.
Game 1: UVa.-Wise 16 – Concord 7 UVa.-Wise (13-31, 12-23 MEC) scored 10 runs in its final three at-bats to claim a nine-run victory over CU (28-19, 24-18 MEC).
After the Cavaliers had taken a 10-2 lead with the help of four runs in the fourth, Concord responded with five runs in the top of the fifth to close the deficit to 10-7.
Junior outfielder
Andrew Seigel highlighted the inning with a two-run double to left center field. Senior first baseman
Ryan Johnston, freshman outfielder
Andy Szamski and redshirt freshman catcher
Paul Williams all had one RBI in the fifth with Williams smacking his own double down the left field line.
The three-run deficit would be as close as the Mountain Lions would get as UVa.-Wise plated six runs combined in the fifth and sixth.
Seigel (two) and Szamski (three) combined for five of Concord's seven RBI while junior infielder
Holt Cassada along with Seigel and Szamski each had two hits.
Sophomore pitcher
Nate Werner (4-4) was hit with the loss as he went 3.1 innings giving up eight runs.
Game 2: UVa.-Wise 8 – Concord 2Five runs by UVa.-Wise in the fourth inning allowed the Cavaliers to turn a slim 3-1 lead into an 8-1 advantage.
CU got runs in the first and fifth innings as Williams singled in Cassada to start the game. CU's second run was provided by Szamski, who scored Seigel on a sacrifice fly.
Freshman
Angel Morales (0-1) was charged with the loss despite not giving up an earned run in 2.2 innings. Morales allowed three unearned runs to cross the plate in his time on the mound.
Concord earned the fifth seed in the Mountain East Conference Tournament that will begin Thursday at Epling Stadium in Beckley, West Virginia.
The Mountain Lions will play West Virginia State 3:00 p.m. Thursday. Â
