Concord Defeats Charleston, Advances in Winner's Bracket

SALEM, Va. – Three runs in third inning by the Concord University softball team against the University of Charleston was more than enough for junior pitcher Allie Reid as Concord defeated UC 3-0 in its second game of the Mountain East Conference Tournament at Moyer Sports Complex.

CU will now advance to Saturday's winner's bracket final against West Virginia Wesleyan at 5:00 p.m. at Moyer Sports Complex.

But against UC, Reid shut down the Golden Eagles' offense as she gave up just three hits while striking out five batters and retiring 14 of the last 16 batters she faced in the game.

While Reid was keeping the Charleston (36-11, 20-8 MEC) bats quiet, CU (33-15, 19-7 MEC) was providing run support for the Lovettsville, Virginia native.

The bottom of the third inning began with sophomore shortstop Alayna Furr reaching on an error, junior catcher Alyssa Morris singling to left field and sophomore outfielder Lauren Lewis getting hit by a pitch.

After Charleston threw out Furr at home on a fielder's choice, senior first baseman / pitcher Lacey McDougall drew a bases-loaded to plate the game's first run. McDougall's long at-bat was followed by a sacrifice fly from junior second baseman Kristen Rose that scored Lewis.

The final CU run came on a ball hit deep in the hole at shortstop by freshman infielder Alycea Watson. The New Castle, Delaware native hustled down the line to beat out the throw allowing Reid, who reached on a fielder's choice, to score.

With Saturday's dazzling performance, Reid has now tossed 23.2 innings without allowing an earned run.

Furthermore, in two starts against Charleston this season Reid has limited UC to hits and no runs while striking out nine batters in 14 innings of work.

Earlier this season, Concord split a home doubleheader with WVWC.
