ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Davis & Elkins Wednesday afternoon at Anderson Field, 9-3 and 10-1.
The Mountain Lions improve to 20-10 while D&E falls to 2-20.
Game 1: Concord 9 – Davis & Elkins 3CU combined to score all nine runs in the fourth and fifth inning after trailing 2-0 entering the fourth.
Senior outfielder
T.J. Brockway led off the fourth with his first home run of the season to draw to within 2-1. After an RBI base hit from redshirt freshman catcher
Paul Williams and a two-out, two-RBI single from freshman outfielder
Andy Szamski, Concord pulled ahead of Davis & Elkins 4-2.
The Mountain Lions received RBI from redshirt freshman third baseman / pitcher
Damon Frazier, junior outfielder
Andrew Seigel and Williams while Szamski knocked into two more runs in a five-run fifth inning from the Mountain Lions.
Eight of nine starting position players for CU recorded hits in the game with Brockway and Williams each registering three. Szamski (four) and Williams (two) had multi-RBI games.
On the mound, senior pitcher
Bryant Pybus tossed his first career complete game to run his record to 3-0 this season. Pybus scattered 11 hits and three runs over seven innings while fanning a career-best five batters in his first start of the season.
Game 2: Concord 10 – Davis & Elkins 1 (Five Innings)Thunderstorms and heavy rain in the area forced the teams to only play five innings.
Concord chased Senators' starter Forrest Williamson from the game after he recorded four outs with the Mountain Lions plated nine runs in the first two innings.
Once again, eight of nine batters in the Concord lineup recorded at least one hit with Frazier, junior catcher
Charles Goss, Seigel and junior shortstop
Brad Sullivan each pounding out two hits.
Senior outfielder
Jerrod Groves had his third three-RBI game of the season while Goss and senior first baseman
Ryan Johnston each had two RBI for CU.
In a seven-run second inning, the Mountain Lions sent 13 guys to the plate as five different Concord players tallied RBI in the frame led by Goss and Groves each knocking in two.
Sophomore pitcher
Zach Kelly allowed one earned run on two hits and struck out two batters in four innings of work as the Daleville, Virginia native earned his fourth win of the season. Senior pitcher
Barinder Rakkar sat down the Senators in order in the top of the fifth before the game was called.
Concord will host Wheeling Jesuit in Mountain East Conference action at Anderson Field 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
