ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball dropped a pair of games against West Virginia State Thursday afternoon at Anderson Field in Mountain East Conference play.
After falling 9-2 and 6-1, CU is now 23-13 and 19-11 in the MEC. Meanwhile WVSU improves to 20-11 overall and 20-8 against the conference.
Game 1: West Virginia State 9 – Concord 2The Concord bats went quiet after freshman outfielder
Andy Szamski's two-run single in the first inning as the Yellow Jackets reeled off the next nine runs including seven in the third inning.
Szamski's two-RBI base hit in the opening frame brought home junior outfielder
Andrew Seigel and junior shortstop
Brad Sullivan who reached on a fielder's choice and single earlier in the inning.
Szamski recorded his 45
th and 46
th RBI of the season.
After WVSU tied the game at 2-2 in the third, it appeared Concord was going to get out of the inning without any more damage, but a Mountain Lions' error with two outs kept the West Virginia State rally going. The Yellow Jackets proceeded to knock five more runs in to open up a 7-2 lead.
West Virginia State added two more runs in the sixth for the final 9-2 margin.
Senior pitcher
Bryant Pybus (3-1) threw all seven innings allowing four earned runs and striking out one batter.
Seigel, Sullivan and Szamski each had two hits as they combined for six of the 10 CU hits.
Game 2: West Virginia State 6 – Concord 1WVSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings and added a late two-run insurance home run in the seventh to win 6-1.
Redshirt freshman catcher
Paul Williams hit his first career home run in the Maroon and Gray, a lead-off homer to start the fifth inning.
Along with Williams, senior first baseman
Ryan Johnston, Seigel, Sullivan and Szamski each added one hit for the Mountain Lions.
Sophomore pitcher
Nate Werner (4-2) lost for the first time in over a month as he gave up six runs.
The Mountain Lions will be back in action tomorrow at home versus West Virginia Wesleyan to begin a four-game series at 1:00 p.m.
