ATHENS, W.Va. – A furious comeback by the Concord University women's basketball team came up short in a 73-66 loss to Davis & Elkins Wednesday night at the Carter Center in non-conference play.
CU (7-20, 7-14 MEC) trailed 37-25 at halftime, and 46-38 with 13:38 left in the game before they hit the comeback trail.
The Mountain Lions ran off 13 of the game's next 14 points with five different Mountain Lions scoring during the run. Senior forward
Rachel Artrip scored four points, senior guard
Melea Smith connected on a three-pointer and freshman guard
Danielle Catron, junior forward
Kylie Molisee and freshman guard
Marta Moix each added two points.
With 8:33 left in the contest, CU held a 51-47 advantage.
The Senators (12-13, 7-8 GMAC) Â answered back by going on a run of 17-4 of their own to lead 64-55 with 3:07 remaining.
However, the Mountain Lions weren't done trying to pull off a come-from-behind victory on Senior Night.
Down 66-58 with 1:07 left Concord scored five points in 20 seconds to pull with 66-63, but D&E was able to convert at the free-throw line to seal the 73-66 win.
Molisee led all scorers with 20 points, marking the fourth time the Peck, Kansas native has scored exactly 20 points in her Concord career.
Smith connected on a team-best four three-point attempts to finish with 16 points. Artrip added 10 points to round out the Mountain Lion scorers in double figures.
For the second time in three homes games, senior forward
Jacqueline Kestner flirted with a triple-double as she scored nine points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out eight assists. Kestner matched her career best on the offensive glass with seven boards.
CU came away with a season-high 14 steals as Molisee matched her career high four steals. Artrip (two), Moix (two), sophomore guard
Olivia Morgan (three) and Smith (two) all had multi-steal games for the Maroon and Gray.
Concord will close the regular season 2:00 p.m. Saturday at UVa.-Wise. By beating UVa.-Wise the Mountain Lions would host the Cavaliers in the first round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament Tuesday. A loss at UVa.-Wise would mean a return trip to southwestern Virginia Tuesday night.
