Rob Reed Ties MEC Record with 10 Three-Pointers, Concord Rolls Past W.Va. State 98-75

ATHENS, W.Va. – Junior guard Rob Reed powered a 20-5 run for the Concord University men's basketball team to open the second half as they turned a relatively close game into a 98-75 blowout win over West Virginia State Saturday afternoon at the Carter Center in Mountain East Conferenc e action.

Leading 51-36 with 17:36 remaining in the contest, Concord (16-8, 12-7 MEC) scored the game's next 18 points and 20 of the next 25 overall as they led 71-41 at the 12:56 mark of the second half.

Reed scored 15 of the 20 points as he erupted for four of his game-high 10 three-pointers during the run. Reed's outburst of 10 three-pointers matched the single-game MEC record and tied the Concord single-game record for most three-pointers made. The South Bend, Indiana native now shares the CU record with Concord Hall of Famer Todd Lusk, who made 10 three-pointers versus West Virginia Tech in 1991.

Furthermore, Reed recorded the third 40-point game in MEC history, finishing with 40 points on 12-for-20 shooting and 10-for-16 from three-point range. And Reed's 40-point game came just a week after he poured in a career-high 31 points at Wheeling Jesuit.

Once CU gained the 30-point lead, the closest West Virginia State (4-22, 3-15 MEC) got was 21 points in the closing seconds of the contest. The Mountain Lions never trailed for the duration of the game.

Reed wasn't the only Mountain Lion to stand out on Saturday. On his Senior Day, senior guard Mike Boyd collected his fourth career double-double as he registered 11 points and 10 assists. Boyd's final assist came on Reed's record-breaking  10th three-pointer.

Junior guard Jametrius Wade also collected the fifth double-double of his Concord career after a game of 15 points and 12 rebounds. For the regular season, Wade averaged 19.5 points and 16 rebounds against West Virginia State.

Also hitting the glass hard was junior forward Taylor Smith who tallied a career-high 11 rebounds.

After being held to single-digit scoring the last two games, sophomore guard Aaron Miller bounced back with a 20-point game on 8-for-12 shooting versus the Yellow Jackets.
Concord owned a 54-42 advantage on the boards including a 13-10 edge on the offensive glass. The Mountain Lions had 19 second chance points, which only their 22 second chance points at West Virginia State trumped Saturday's effort for the season.

CU held West Virginia State to 35.2 percent shooting (25-for-71). Concord has only held one other opponent, West Virginia Wesleyan (25 percent), to a lower shooting percentage this season.

A Concord win coupled with a Charleston loss to UVa.-Wise now puts the Mountain Lions back into fourth place in the MEC standings. The top four seeds receive first-round byes in the conference tournament.

Senior guard Paul Byrd was also recognized along with Boyd before Saturday's game.

Concord will next play at Fairmont State 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
