Box Score BECKLEY, W.Va - The Concord University men's soccer team fell 1-0 to the visiting West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats at the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action.
Both teams battled throughout the midfield for much of the first half, with sophomore midfielder Max Simpson and sophomore midfielder
Adam Carnwath each testing West Virginia Wesleyan goalkeeper Luka Pauk in the first 15 minutes. The Bobcats forced senior goalkeeper
Mitchell Thompson to make three of his four saves in the first half.
The second half began with West Virginia Wesleyan getting off two early shots in the first two minutes, but the Bobcats were held without a shot for the next 25 minutes in the period. Thompson was again called into action in the 71
st minute after a shot by Bobcats forward Jordan Halpern forced him to make his final save of the match.
Concord controlled much of the possession throughout that 25-minute period, but it was the Bobcats who struck first as West Virginia Wesleyan countered quickly. Halpern cut inside and played a pass right to the feet of Zach Whiting, who tapped the shot home in the 73rd minute . Concord continued to look for an equalizing goal, and almost had one when Simpson's free kick from about 25 yards out sailed just wide of the goal.
The Bobcats outshot Concord 12-11 overall, and 5-2 in shots on goal. The Bobcats also held the advantage in corner kicks 6-2.
Concord will look to improve its record in conference play when they travel to Urbana for a Friday, October 9 matchup before returning home to host Shepherd on Sunday, October 11.
