Concord Opens Season with Sweep of Winston-Salem State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Concord University softball started the season off with a sweep of Winston-Salem by scores of 13-2 and 11-3 Saturday afternoon.

Junior catcher Alyssa Morris led the Mountain Lions on the day offensively as she went 5-for-8 with two home runs.

Game 1: Concord 13 – Winston-Salem State 2
CU used a six-run sixth inning to turn a relatively close game into a rout.

Sophomore third baseman Courtney Purtell and senior first baseman Brantlea Wood each collected three hits and four RBI in the game as two of Purtell's hits were doubles.

Senior first baseman / pitcher Lacey McDougall went the distance, pitching all six innings. McDougall gave up just one earned run and struck out three batters in the circle.

Game 2: Concord 11 – Winston-Salem State 3
Morris launched both of her home runs of the day in game two as she totaled three hits in the nightcap. Freshman shortstop / outfielder Alycea Watson hit her first career home run for the Mountain Lions.

In the circle, sophomore pitcher Sarah Herndon scattered eight hits over five innings of work to notch her first win of the season. Freshman pitcher Katie Snodgress pitched the final two innings for the Mountain Lions.

Concord will play 12:00 p.m. Sunday at Pfeiffer.
