BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball fell to Bluefield State, 70-55, Monday night in non-conference action at the Ned Shott Gymnasium.
The Mountain Lions (4-11) were led by junior forward
Kylie Molisee who scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds.
BSC (12-5) started the game on a 13-2 run before the Mountain Lions trimmed their deficit to 19-13 with 12:54 remaining in the first half. Senior forward
Jacqueline Kestner and sophomore center
Alley Odell combined for eight of the CU points during the run.
Bluefield State was able to score four quick points to extend its lead back to double digits as they took a 46-38 lead into halftime.
However, Concord wasn't finished challenging the Lady Blues on the night. Once again, Odell sparked another Mountain Lions rally by scoring six of the Concord points to start the second half. Freshman guard
Danielle Catron added two points to get the Mountain Lions within 12 points, 48-36 at the 17:16 mark of the second half.
After the Lady Blues answered with a quick basket, Molisse recorded four points of her own. With 14:04 left in the game, CU trailed 50-40. But it was the closest the Mountain Lions would get as Bluefield State scored eight straight points en route to the 15-point win.
Joining Molisee in double-figure scoring was Odell, who scored six of her 10 in the second half. It marked the third straight game Odell has notched double digits. Kestner also had 11 points for CU. Â
Senior forward
Rachel Artrip pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds in the defeat and fell just short of double-digit scoring with eight points.
The Mountain Lions held edges in free-throw percentage (81.8-73.3) and points off turnovers (15-12).
Concord will begin a five-game home stand 5:30 p.m. Thursday versus UVa.-Wise.
