Volleyball Splits on Opening Day of Tony Banner Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLARION, Pa. – The Concord University volleyball team fell to Clarion in its season opener at the Tony Banner Invitational, 3-0, (17-25, 18-25, 23-25). However, the Mountain Lions were able to rebound in the nightcap as they beat Adelphi 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 25-17).

Match 1 vs. Clarion
After losing the first two sets, the Mountain Lions jumped out to leads of 6-3 and 16-13 in the third set, but could not hang on to force a fourth set.

Senior setter Nikki McMillan recorded 17 assists in addition to 10 digs. Senior middle hitter Sarah Jones led CU with 10 kills while senior outside hitter Brytni Willis chipped in nine kills for the match. Sophomore middle hitter Lauren Richardson set a new career-high with six kills against Clarion.

Other top performers for the Mountain Lions included senior setter Whytni Willis who had five assists and four kills. Freshman middle hitter Shea Hoffman began her collegiate career with three kills. Senior libero Amanda Walker led Concord in digs with 11.

Match 2 vs. Adelphi
After splitting the first two sets with the Panthers, the Mountain Lions won the last two sets to secure its first win of the season.

With the first three sets being tightly contested throughout, Concord wasted no time in putting away Adelphi in the fourth set as CU raced out to a 16-4 advantage before cruising to a 25-17 final set victory. 

Once again, it was Jones and Brytni Willis that led the Concord offense with 11 and 13 kills respectively. Both players recorded impressive hitting percentage as Jones registered a .417 hitting percentage while Brynti Willis finished the match at .400. McMillan had another double-digit assist match with 10. Hoffman contributed six kills to the CU attack recorded a .350 team hitting percentage, which was its best since they hit .526 against Virginia Union on October 20, 2012. 

Richardson tallied six assists for CU to best her previous career-high of one. Freshman setter Casey Mandeville matched Richardson in assists with six of her own. 

The Mountain Lions will conclude play at the Tony Banner Invitationa with a pair of matches against Wayne State at 9 a.m. and versus Walsh at 5 p.m.
