Box Score ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team fell to Ursuline Thursday afternoon at Anderson Field, 3-1, in the season opener for both teams.
The Mountain Lions could not overcome two second half goals from the Arrows in the defeat.
For the first 30 minutes of the game, both teams struggled to advance the ball for goal-scoring opportunities. The best chance for the Mountain Lions early in the game was when sophomore
Emily Cole's shot was blocked in the front of the net by the Ursuline defense in the fifth minute.
The Arrows got on the scoreboard first when Cassie Cripe got the ball past Concord freshman goalkeeper
Lacie Geisel in the 30
th minutes.
To open the second half, the Mountain Lions came out firing and tied the game on junior forwards
Kari Simon's goal in the 47
th minute. Cole recorded the assist on Simon's goal. Over the next two minutes each team had chances with Simon recording another shot on goal and Geisel making a save on the defensive end to preserve a 1-1 tie. However, Concord couldn't keep Ursuline out of the goal. The Arrows struck for a goal in the 51
st minute and added another goal in the 54
th minute. Sophomore midfielder
Margot Provencher attempted to cut the deficit to one in the 73
rd minute, but her shot was wide of the goal.
Ursuline was able to dodge any other Concord goal-scoring attempts to win 3-1.
Simon tallied all three CU shots on goal in the defeat and Geisel made four saves for the Mountain Lions.
Ursuline was able to outshoot the Mountain Lions in total shots (7-5) and shots on goal (7-3). The Arrows also held an advantage in corner kicks (7-4).
Concord will return to Anderson Field Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. to play WVU Tech.
