Box Score WISE, Virginia – The Concord University volleyball team dropped a five-set match to UVa.-Wise (24-26, 25-18, 16-25, 25-17, 11-15) Wednesday night in Mountain East Conference action.
Concord falls to 8-8 overall and 0-4 in the MEC while UVa.-Wise moves to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Senior outside hitter
Brytni Willis finished one kill away from her season high as she notched 19 kills and 12 digs to tally her third double-double of the season. Senior middle hitter
Sarah Jones also recorded a double-double (14 kills, 12 digs).
The first set was a back and forth affair as neither team led by more than three points. With the Cavaliers one point away from clinching the first set, Concord fought back from 21-24 to tie the set at 24-24, but ultimately fell 26-24.
With the second set tied at 7-7, Concord went on a 13-7 run to take control of the game with a lead of 20-15, eventually winning 25-18. The third set saw UVa.-Wise finish on a 14-5 after the set was tied at 11-11.
However, the Mountain Lions rebounded in the fourth set by beginning the game on an 11-5 run. In the extended, Jones tallied four kills for the Mountain Lions. Willis finished strong in the fourth set by registering three of Concord's final four kills.
UVa.-Wise never trailed in the fifth set as they won 15-11. Concord threatened the Cavaliers by trimming the lead to 9-8, but could not overtake UVa.-Wise.
Freshman middle hitter
Shea Hoffman continued her recent run of recording blocks as she had four total blocks. Over her last four matches, the South Charleston, West Virginia native has 16 total blocks.
Senior libero
Amanda Walker served three of Concord's four aces in addition to her 11 digs. Senior setter
Nikki McMillan went over the 20 assist plateau for the fourth time this season by finishing with 21 assists and 10 digs in the losing effort.
Freshman setter
Casey Mandeville came off the bench to pass out 18 assists to the Concord attack.
The Mountain Lions will travel to West Virginia Wesleyan Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
