Box Score ATHENS, W.Va. – Behind three second half goals, the Concord University men's soccer team won its first game of the 2014 season by beating Urbana 4-1 Wednesday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play.

The win over the Blue Knights pushed Concord's record to 1-4-1 overall and 1-2 in the MEC while Urbana fell to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the league.

CU got the scoring started early when junior forward David Nwankwo netted his first goal of the season just 9:03 into the game. However, Urbana answered Concord's early goal by scoring three minutes to level the match for the rest of the first half at 1-1.

Twelve minutes into the second half, freshman midfielder Adam Carnwath delivered a ball into the penalty box to fellow freshman midfielder Royale Johnson, who was able to fend off two Urbana players and blast the ball past Blue Knights goalkeeper Nathan Jones. The goal gave the Mountain Lions a 2-1 advantage.

With CU clinging to a one-goal edge, the Mountain Lions added some insurance with 11 minutes left in the game when freshman midfielder Maximillian Simpson struck a free kick into the penalty area, where junior defender Jared Garlow connected on his first goal of the season.

Concord was well in control of the game with four minutes remaining, but after a failed attempt by Urbana to trim the deficit, the Mountain Lions got out in transition. Junior midfielder Eduardo Filho hit Johnson in stride as he beat Jones once again for his second goal of the game, giving CU the final margin of victory, 4-1.

The four goals the Mountain Lions netted were the most since Oct. 10, 2012 when they scored four goals against Virginia Intermont in a 4-3 win.

Junior goalkeeper Mitchell Thompson made six saves for Concord in the win, improving his record to 1-2.

The teams finished even on total shots (15) and shots on goal (7) with Urbana holding the edge in corner kicks (7-2).

CU will continue MEC action Saturday at Wheeling Jesuit. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.
