Concord Uses Late Score to Best Shepherd

Abby Barber
Box Score ATHENS, W.Va. – A free kick goal from senior back Abby Barber with less than a minute left in regulation propelled the Concord University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Mountain East Conference opponent Shepherd Wednesday afternoon at Anderson Field.

The win moves CU to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in the MEC while Shepherd fell to 2-3-1 and 0-2 in conference play.

After a scoreless first half that saw Shepherd outshoot Concord 8-3, the action picked up in the second period. Just 30 seconds into the second half, Shepherd got on the scoreboard to take a 1-0 advantage over CU.

In the 58th minute, sophomore forward Emily Cole found senior midfielder Stacey Calder inside the 18-yard box off of a throw in, where Calder was able to beat Rams' goalkeeper Anna Mueller for her second goal of the season.

Over the next 30 minutes, Shepherd kept the ball inside of Mountain Lion territory, constantly pressuring the CU defense and sophomore goalkeeper Lacie Geisel, who made a career-high eight saves.

Once Concord was able to control the ball into their scoring area, the Mountain Lions drew a foul outside of the penalty with just over a minute left in the game. Barber lined up over the ball and was able to blast it past the SU defensive wall and the last line of defense, Mueller.

The game-winning goal was Barber's sixth career goal.

Despite being bested on total shots (17-6) and shots on goal (9-5), the Mountain Lions made the most of their opportunities by converting two of their five shots on goal.

In addition to Barber and Calder's shots on goal, freshman midfielder Karri Albanese, freshman midfielder Micharae Thompson and junior midfielder Samatha Wood had strikes on goal.

Next up for Concord will be a home contest with MEC foe West Liberty Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
