Concord Prepares for Bowie State Saturday

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University football team will start a brief two-game homestand beginning with its only non-conference matchup of the season versus Bowie State at 12 p.m. Saturday.

MOUNTAIN LIONS NOTES

• The Mountain Lions' offensive performance through the first two weeks of the season has been among the best in Division II.

• After defeating West Virginia State 55-7, the high-powered Mountain Lion offense is ranked fourth in the nation in scoring at 54.5 points per game.

• The offensive firepower has been led by sophomore quarterback Brian Novak, who has thrown six touchdowns and to just one interception in two
games.

• Against the Yellow Jackets, Novak completed 14-of-17 passes for 297 yardsand five touchdowns. His passing efficiency of 326.1 against the Yellow Jackets is the highest for a quarterback in a single game in Division II thus far this season.

• Furthermore, Novak's season passing efficiency of 208.7 is second among all Division II passers.

• The College Park, Maryland native's top target against WVSU was junior wide receiver Ryan Stewart, who finished with six catches for 175 yards and a career-high four touchdowns.

• Stewart became the first CU receiver to catch three or more touchdown passes since Ansel Ponder reeled in three scores agaisnt Fairmont State during the 2012 season.

• With his four touchdowns, Stewart moved from tied for ninth to fifth alltime in touchdown receptions with 15 at Concord.

• Additionally, Novak was the first Concord signal caller to throw five touchdowns in a game since Zack Grossi tossed five touchdowns against West Virginia Wesleyan in the 2011 conference championship game.

• Saturday marked the 11th time that junior running back Calvinaugh Jones has exceeded the 100-yard mark on the ground and now stands just six yards away from becoming the 10th\ CU rusher to have more than 2,000 yards in his career.

• After his six made PATs versus West Virginia State, junior kicker Andy Ellington is now the all-time leading scorer at Concord with 133 points. The Winfield, West Virginia native passed former kicker Brandon Strupp for first all-time.

• The 48-point win the Mountain Lions enjoyed over West Virginia State was the largest margin of victory since a 51-point win to open up the 2010 season against Southern Virginia.

• Moreover, Saturday marked the first time since 2005 that the Mountain Lions scored more than 50 points and gave up less than 10. During the 2005 season, CU defeated WVU Tech 51-6.

• The defensive play can be credited to several Concord players, but in his CU debut junior safety Derrick Johnson came away with nine tackles, the second-highest for theMountain Lions and snared his first interception.

• In fact, Concord intercepted West Virginia State quarterback Matt Kinnick three times with senior cornerback Mike Carey grabbing his sixth career interception and redshirt freshman cornerback Jeremiah Johnson picking off his first pass.

• It was the second consecutive year that Concord defenders intercepted three passes against West Virginia State.

• Also having a big defensive day for the Mountain Lions against WVSU was junior linebacker Brandon Hazzard, who racked up 11 tackles in just his second career game in the Maroon and Gray.

• The sack that senior defensive end Silas Agyemang registered against WVSU ties with him current CU junior pass rusher Ervin Moore for fourth all-time in quarterback takdowns with nine.

• Through two weeks of the play, the Concord offense ranks in the top five in the Mountain East Conference in all offensive categories including being the best scoring offense as well as the top passing offense at 345.5 yards per game through the air.

• Not only have the Mountain Lions excelled passing the ball, but they have done a superb job of making their opponents one-dimensional by shutting down the passing game.
Concord is only allowing 187.5 yards per game passing, second best in the MEC.

• A major part of the passing game's success on the offensive side has been the play of the offensive line as they have yet to give up a sack to the opposition in two games.
Concord will be looking to avenge a 16-10 loss to the Bulldogs last season.

• A season ago, senior defensive lineman Keith Ferguson made a career-high 10 tackles against BSU while tallying two tackles for loss and a sack.

• Senior linebacker Gary Saylor had one of his best game in a Concord uniform at Bowie State as he came away with eight tackles.

• With a win over Bowie State, the Mountain Lions would start 2-0 at home for the second straight year.

• Additionally, CU is seeking its first 3-0 start to a season since 2010 when they beat Southern Virginia, Lenoir-Rhyne and West Virginia Wesleyan to start the campaign.

• Of the 27 posssessions CU has had on offense this season, 17 have resulted in points with 15 touchdowns and two field goals.

• Bowie State comes to Athens with a 0-2 record after a narrow 23-22 loss to St. Anslem to open the season before falling to Division I FCS school Morgan State 28-3 in week two.

• The Bulldogs are averaging 184 rushing yards per game, which is second best in their conference, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
