Concord Falls to West Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer fell in its Mountain East Conference opener to West Virginia Wesleyan, 3-1, Saturday night at Cebe Ross Field.

The Mountain Lions were unable to overcome an early second half deficit of 2-0 against the Bobcats. With the loss, CU is now 2-2 on the season and 0-1 in the MEC.

After a scoreless first half in which redshirt goalkeeper Lacie Geisel turned away four WVWC shots, the Bobcats broke through four minutes into the second half to take a 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later at the 51:06 mark, West Virginia Wesleyan found the back of the next again to lead CU 2-0.

On the restart in play, junior forward Kari Simon sliced the lead in half with her fourth goal of the season. However, WVWC grabbed a two-goal lead less than one minute after Simon's goal at the 52:09 mark.

Throughout the rest of the second half, Concord was able to get two more shots on goal, both by freshman back Kaeli Studebaker, but the Bobcats goalkeeper Lauren Duncan saved both shots as CU fell 3-1.

In addition to Studebaker's two shots on goal and Simon's goal, senior midfielder Sami Spertzel recorded a shot on goal.

West Virginia Wesleyan outshot Concord in total shots (24-6), and shots on goal (8-4). Both teams finished with three corner kicks.

The Mountain Lions will face MEC foe Shepherd Wednesday at Anderson Field. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
