Concord Defeats Salem International, 8-0

Box Score ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team got two goals each from junior forward Chloe Barber, junior forward Kari Simon and sophomore Emily Cole as they beat Salem International 8-0 Wednesday afternoon at Anderson field.

Simon started the scoring for the Mountain Lions in the 25th minute with an assist from senior midfielder Sami Spertzel. Barber tallied her first goal of the season on a crossing pass from sophomore back Kiana Brown to make it 2-0 CU in the 32nd minute. Senior midfielder Stacey Calder connected on a penalty kick in the 34th minute to stretch the advantage to 3-0. The final CU goal of the first half came on nice ball movement from Cole and sophomore midfielder Sara van den Akker to set up Barber's second goal.

Cole would join the goal-scoring parade 10 minutes into the second half by racing past a couple of Salem International defenders to net her first goal of the season. After another SIU infraction inside its own penalty box, Simon stepped up and drilled home a penalty kick in the 59th minute. Cole would collect her second goal on the day with an assist from Barber while redshirt freshman back Cassiday Maynard scored her first career goal with an assist from freshman back Kaeli Studebaker to cap off the CU scoring in the 80th minute.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Lacie Geisel and freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Hanrahan combined for a team shutout of SIU with Geisel improving to 2-1-0 on the season.

Nine Concord players recorded a point in the game with Barber and Cole each finishing with five. Wednesday marked the first multi goal games for Barber and Cole while Simon collected her fourth multi-goal game at Concord.

The eight-goal win was the largest margin of victory for the Mountain Lions since the 2010 season when they beat Salem International 9-0.

Concord will begin its Mountain East Conference schedule Saturday at West Virginia Wesleyan. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. in Buckhannon, West Virginia.
