Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball split a doubleheader with the University of Charleston Saturday afternoon at Triana Field in Mountain East Conference action.
Concord lost the first game 5-3 before rebounding to win 3-0 in the night cap behind a three-hit shutout from senior pitcher Tyler Coyle. The Mountain Lions are now 19-11 overall and 16-8 in MEC play. Meanwhile, UC is 11-14 overall and 7-16 against conference competition.
The Mountain Lions rallied for three runs over the final two innings, but it wasn't enough as they fell 5-3 in the defeat.
For the two games Concord was paced by senior outfielder Bret Blevins, who finished 2-for-6 with a run scored and two RBI. Junior third baseman Ryan Johnston was 3-for-6 with a run scored.
In game one Charleston scored one run in each of the first three innings to jump out to a 3-0 lead. UC would add another run in the bottom of the fifth before Concord got on the board in the sixth.
Junior second baseman Jerrod Groves doubled to advance senior catcher Brandon Costa to third base who had reached earlier in the inning on an error. Sophomore outfielder Andrew Seigel would bring on home Costa on a sacrifice fly. Blevins would single home Groves to reduce the deficit to 4-2.
Charleston would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead. Johnston doubled with one out in the top of the seventh before being plated on an RBI-single from sophomore shortstop Brad Sullivan. One run would be all CU scored in the seventh to fall, 5-3.
Senior first baseman Joey Miller produced a 2-for-3 outing with Blevins, Seigel and Sullivan all going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Groves and Johnston also had one hit a piece for the Mountain Lions.
Senior pitcher Ryan Weatherholtz tossed six innings giving up four earned runs and 11 hits and striking out seven batters.
In the nightcap Coyle only allowed one hit after the second inning and retired 15 of the final 17 batters he faced.
Coyle threw seven innings while allowing a season-low three hits and striking out one batter.
The Mountain Lions scored all three of their runs in the sixth inning. Groves began the inning by reaching on an error before advancing on a sacrifice bunt by Seigel. Blevins would plate Groves on an RBI single. Sophomore designated hitter Joe Camp hit a single of his own to score Blevins. CU's final run was scored by Miller who had reached base on a walk and came home on a wild pitch.
In game two Blevins and Camp each had 1-for-3 performances with an RBI while Blevins also scored a run. Johnston was 2-for-3.
