Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team split a doubleheader Saturday with West Virginia State, losing 2-0 in game one before bouncing back to win the nightcap 6-4, at Lady Jacket Field in Institute, W.Va.

Concord moves to 29-19 overall and 13-13 in Mountain East Conference play after the split. Meanwhile, West Virginia State is now 25-23 overall and tied with Concord in the league standings at 13-13.

The Mountain Lions offense was led by the duo of freshman outfielder Lauren Lewis, who produced a 4-for-7 effort including two runs scored, a home run, two RBI and her 11th stolen base of the season while extending her hitting streak to a season-long 16 games.

Sophomore designated player Alyssa Morris tallied a 3-for-7 performance that included her team-leading ninth home run of the year. Morris' blast tied her for most home runs in a career at Concord with 18.

Sophomore pitcher Allie Reid (16-8) was stellar for the Mountain Lions all day as she saw action in both games, recording every out in the doubleheader. For the day Reid tossed 13 innings while scattering two runs on eight hits and striking out four batters.

Back-to-back home runs by Mattie Best and Alana Weyant in the first inning by West Virginia State were too much for the Mountain Lions to overcome as they fell 2-0 in the opener.

After giving up the homers Reid settled down to allow just two more hits over the final six innings; she did not give up a hit after the third inning.

Lewis, Morris, freshman catcher Carly DiVirgilio and junior first baseman Brantlea Wood each tallied one hit for the CU in game one.

After being shutout, Concord's offense exploded for five runs in the third inning of game two en route to the 6-4 victory in the triumph.

With the game tied at 0-0 and sophomore outfielder Kristi Benvenuto on first base after a leadoff hit in the third inning, Lewis smashed her seventh home run of the season to give CU a 2-0 advantage. Not to be outdone, Morris followed Lewis with her record-tying home run to push Concord's lead to 3-0. The Mountain Lions tacked on two more runs to exit the inning up 5-0 when junior outfielder Jessica Seymour drove in Reid and sophomore second baseman Kristen Rose off of a base hit.

Concord added a run in the fourth inning on an RBI-groundout by Reid, scoring Lewis, who reached earlier in the frame on a single.

West Virginia State cut the CU lead to 6-4 off of a four-run fifth inning. However, Reid ended the comeback bid by throwing a 1-2-3 sixth inning and getting out of a two-out bases loaded jam in the seventh off of a Weyant groundout to end the game and secure the win for Concord.

Lewis and Seymour each recorded three-hit games in the victory. Lewis finished with two runs, a home run, two RBI and a stolen base while Seymour tallied two RBI and three stolen bases. Morris also had a multi-hit game, her 13th of the season, going 2-for-4 with the aforementioned home run.

Reid started game two, but was relieved by Wood in the fifth inning, but re-entered four batters later to finish the game. Wood allowed four runs, all unearned, while giving up two hits and one walk.

Concord concludes its 2014 regular season 1:00 p.m. Sunday at the University of Charleston in games that will have implications in the Division II Atlantic Regional rankings as the two teams are currently slotted eighth and ninth in the region.
