Concord Splits Doubleheader at Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team split a doubleheader at West Virginia Wesleyan, winning 11-2 and losing 6-2, Saturday at Hank Ellis Field in Mountain East Conference action.

The two-game split moves CU to 29-13 this season and 26-10 in the MEC play.

Offensively, the Mountain Lions were led by junior third baseman Ryan Johnston who was 5-for-8 with two runs scored and three RBI while sophomore outfielder Charlie Goss was 3-for-6 with one run scored.

Three multi-run innings propelled Concord to an 11-2 win in game one.

The Mountain Lions scored three runs in the third while posting two runs in the fourth and three runs in the sixth inning.

Concord produced one-run innings in the second, fifth and seventh.

Johnston and sophomore designated hitter Joe Camp both had three-hit games with Camp going 3-for-3. Junior outfielder Bret Blevins, junior second baseman Jerrod Groves, sophomore outfielder Andrew Seigel and Goss all recorded two hits in the win.

Sophomore pitcher Chris Kelly improved to 7-2 this season while tossing five innings, scattering eight hits, allowing one earned run and striking out three batters. Junior Bryant Pybus relieved Kelly, giving up two hits over the final two innings.

A three-run second inning was too much for the Mountain Lions to overcome in the nightcap as they were bested 6-2.

Johnston was 2-for-3 for Concord with one RBI and Blevins tallied a 1-for-3 performance with an RBI as well.

Freshman Zach Kelly (5-2) was charged with the loss as he pitched 3.1 innings, giving up seven hits, one earned run and recording one strikeout. Senior Tim Leather pitched the final 2.2 innings for Concord as he scattered five hits and struck out one hitter. Leather improved his scoreless innings streak to 14 in the relief appearance.

The Mountain Lions will return home 1:00 p.m. Saturday to face West Liberty.
