Wide Receiver Preview with Coach Pennington – Complete Spring Prospectus – Spring Overview with Coach Justice

ATHENS, W. Va. - A year ago the Concord University football team was faced with the task of replacing three of its top four wide receivers. This season the Mountain Lions have the luxury of returning all five of its wide outs that saw significant playing time in 2013. Add in players that redshirted a season ago as well as new recruits and Concord's 2014 wide receivers have potential to be the deepest and most explosive collection CU has seen at the position.

"The wide receiver corps at Concord is an experienced group," Concord receivers coach John Pennington said. "We have a lot of guys coming back this spring and we are hoping to develop a little more explosiveness on the outside."

Pennington recently sat down to discuss the Mountain Lions' wide outs entering spring practice. To view the interview click here.

Leading the unit is senior Darrick Williams, who has played in a position-high 30 games in his Mountain Lions career. Williams is coming off of his finest season at Concord having caught a team-high 39 passes for 510 yards and a pair of touchdowns last year. Williams, who had at least four receptions in a game five times a season ago, begins his final season needing just 25 catches to rank 10th at Concord in career receptions.

Junior wide receiver Tiko Henderson had a breakout season as a sophomore in 2013, catching 34 passes for team-highs of 620 yards and three touchdowns. For his efforts, Henderson, who averaged 18.2 yards per reception, earned second team All-Mountain East Conference recognition. The Lancaster, Va. native registered over 100 yards in a game four times including a team season-high 143 vs. West Virginia State.

Sophomore Davon McGill added six receptions, 107 yards and one touchdown while appearing in seven games as a freshman. The 6-3 target played his best football when it mattered most, catching four passes for 92 yards and one touchdown against Shepherd with the Mountain East Conference championship at stake.

Plagued by injuries the last two seasons, junior Ryan Stewart is fully healthy and ready to return to his freshman season form when he scored 10 touchdowns while grabbing 44 passes and compiling 831 yards.

Junior D.J. Holmes brings a veteran presence to the squad having played 21 games since coming to Concord in 2011. Holmes went for a career-best 90 yards on six catches, including his first collegiate touchdown, last year.

Sophomore Casey Cottrell as well as redshirt freshmen Tyler Dotson, Paul Jones and Deon Marion will also compete for time after not playing in 2013 as will junior Albert Rose who moved to receiver this winter after spending the past three seasons at quarterback.

Concord head coach Garin Justice brought in six players as part of CU's 2014 recruiting class that will begin their Mountain Lion careers at wide receiver in Brandon Bohen, Jermeil Douse, Christian Hedinger, Mark Greenauer, Alex Lee and Jared Yates,

Part two of our Concord football spring preview series will look at the defensive line on Thursday with assistant coach Pat Dawson.
