Box Score 2 WISE, Va. – The Concord University softball team dropped a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at UVa.-Wise Thursday afternoon at Cavalier Field, 8-7 and 10-2.
Despite the loss, Concord's is still 19-9 overall this season and 3-3 in MEC play. UVa.-Wise improves to 17-6 overall and 4-0 in league play.
On the day, the Mountain Lions were paced by sophomore shortstop
Kristen Rose, who went 3-for-6 with a run scored and two RBI. Junior outfielder
Jessica Seymour added two hits as well with two runs, a home run and two RBI.
Game One: UVa.-Wise 8 – Concord 7 (Box Score)
UVa.-Wise jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first two innings before the Mountain Lions mounted a furious comeback before ultimately falling in a tight 8-7 decision in game one.
UVa.-Wise tallied six runs in the bottom of the first thanks to two-run scoring doubles from Kristina Romualdo and Megan Dillion. CU quickly went to work on trimming its deficit in the second inning when sophomore pitcher
Allie Reid led the off the inning with a double. Two batters later Seymour launched her second home run of the season to right field to make it a 6-2 game.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the fourth when the Cavaliers added a run making it 7-2 UVa.-Wise. However, The Mountain Lions answered back with three runs in the top of the fifth.
Junior first baseman
Brantlea Wood started the rally with a one-out single before being advanced to third on a double from sophomore catcher
Alyssa Morris. Wood went on to score on freshman designated player
Alayna Furr's single to make it 7-3 UVa.-Wise. After stealing second base, Furr and Morris both scored on a throwing error by the Cavaliers' catcher to pull CU within two runs at 7-5.
Concord cut into the two-run deficit in the sixth when Wood's single plated Seymour, who had reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning and was advanced on a base hit by Rose. CU tied the game in the top of the seventh off of freshman outfielder
Lauren Lewis' second career home run to even the score at 7-7 heading into the bottom of the inning..
However, UVa.-Wise managed to escape with the one-run victory on a walk-off single by Alexa Hernandez.
Wood, Morris, Furr, who also stole two bases, and Lewis all had two-hit games for CU while Seymour tallied her second two-RBI game of the season.
Reid struck out seven batters over 6.2 innings for Concord in the defeat to fall to 10-3 on the season.
Game Two: UVa.-Wise 10 – Concord 2 (Five Innings) (Box Score)
A six-run Cavalier first inning proved to be too much for Concord to overcome in game two as UVa.-Wise went on to tally four runs in the third inning while Taylor Brandts kept the Mountain Lions' bats in check in a 10-2 five-inning decision in the nightcap.
Rose belted her third home run of the season in a 2-for-3, two-RBI effort in game two to pace Concord. Other top performers in game two for Concord included sophomore outfielder
Kristi Benvenuto (1-for-2, one run), freshman third baseman
Courtney Purtell (1-for-2) and Seymour (1-for-2).
Freshman pitcher
Sarah Herndon (2-4) pitched four innings, giving up seven earned runs on six hits and striking out four hitters in the loss.
Concord continues its MEC road trip 1:00 p.m. Sunday at Urbana University. The Mountain Lions' originally scheduled doubleheader Saturday at Notre Dame College had been postponed until 12:00 p.m. Monday.
