Baseball Set for Six-Game Homestand

ATHENS, W. Va. – The Concord University baseball team will look to return to the top of the Mountain East Conference standings with victories over league rivals West Virginia State and Glenville State at Anderson Field. CU will host the Yellow Jackets for a doubleheader 1:00 p.m. Thursday before embarking on a four-game home series against the Pioneers March 29-30.

Records and Standings
• Concord enters the week slotted fourth in the MEC standings and sixth in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Atlantic Region top-10 poll at 14-8 overall and 11-5 in league play. Most recently, the Mountain Lions lost three out of four games at Urbana.

• After losing four straight games against Shepherd last week, West Virginia State begins play this week seventh in the league standings with an overall record of 12-8 and an MEC mark of 8-8.

• Glenville State, which split four games with West Liberty last weekend, is ninth in the conference standings at 4-13 overall and 4-9 in MEC competition.

The Series
• West Virginia State holds a narrow 31-22 lead over Concord dating back to the 1995 season. The Mountain Lions and Yellow Jackets split four games last season including Concord's win against WVSU in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship game.

• Concord is a perfect 6-0 all-time against Glenville State.

Last Meeting
• Chris Baker threw 4.1 innings of scoreless baseball in relief of starter Devin Smith while Andrew Seigel (3), Jacob Mays (2) and Joey Miller (2) all-had multi-RBI games to lead Concord to the final WVIAC championship with an 11-4 victory against West Virginia State May 4, 2013.

• The Mountain Lions racked up an impressive 24 runs thanks in part to four RBI from Groves, three from Miller and three from Joe Camp in CU's 24-4 win March 16, 2013 against Glenville State.

Mountain Lion Notes
• Concord has been dominant at Anderson Field over the last three years with a 46-16 record (74.2 percent) at home including a 10-1 mark this season.

• The Mountain Lions had its best offensive performance of the season with a 15 runs in its series finale victory against Urbana. The offensive onslaught were the most runs scored by Concord since CU tallied 27 runs April 24, 2013 vs. Bluefield State.

• In the victory, Camp drove in a career-high five RBI. He now has eight multi-RBI games in his career.

• Seigel, who is batting .320 on the season and enters Thursday on a four-game hitting streak, has hit safely in 16 of Concord's last 20 games. On the year, he leads Concord with 10 stolen bases while ranking third in hits (24) and on-base percentage (.407)

• Baker continues to be nearly unhittable out of the Mountain Lions' bullpen. He has now not allowed a run over his last 7.2 innings pitched, a streak of five appearances. Over the stretch, he has surrendered just three hits and earned two saves.

• Miller remains one of the top power hitters in all of NCAA Division II, ranking sixth in nation in slugging percentage (.778) and 20th in RBI per game. Miller leads the MEC in home runs (five), hits (33), RBI (30), doubles (eight), total bases (56) and slugging percentage. His .470 on-base percentage also ranks second in the conference of any player with at least 50 at-bats.

• Junior second baseman Jerrod Groves' eight multi-hit games are second for Concord only to Miller's 11. One of just three players to start all 22 games this season, Groves is currently hitting .321 with a team-high 20 runs scored.

• Senior pitcher Ryan Weatherholtz (3-2) is four wins away from becoming Concord's all-time winningest pitcher.

Scouting West Virginia State
• As a team, West Virginia State ranks third in the MEC in batting average (.316), third in on-base percentage (.391), third in runs scored (98), third in hits (186), third in RBI (84), third in ERA (3.87), fourth in doubles (22) and fifth in slugging percentage (.379).

• Individually, the Yellow Jackets' offense has been led by Jack Hudson, who is batting .396 (21-for-53) with 10 runs, two home runs and 11 RBI.

• On the mound, Tyler Hall is 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 16 innings pitched.

Scouting Glenville State
• Khalfani Mar'Na has driven in a team-high 10 runs on 14 hits, five of which have been doubles, in addition to stealing nine bases.

• Brock McClung is 1-4 with 12 strikeouts and a 5.87 ERA in 23 innings pitched.

The Coaches
• Andrew Wright is in his fourth season at Concord. Since taking over the program, Wright has guided the Mountain Lions to a pair of conference titles and a record of 103-81.

• The dean of MEC coaches, Cal Bailey has compiled a record of 1,041-514 in 36 years as West Virginia State's head coach.

• Tom Gilbert is in his third year at Glenville State. He is 16-96 since taking over the Pioneer program.

• After this weekend's Glenville State series, Concord will play 14 consecutive away contests before returning home to close out the 2014 regular season with four-game series April 26-27 against West Liberty and May 3-4 vs. UVa.-Wise.
