Concord Takes Pair From Shepherd 5-1, 6-3

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ATHENS, W.Va. – Behind strong pitching performances from junior Lacey McDougall and sophomore Allie Reid, the Concord University softball team swept Shepherd, 5-1 and 6-3, Friday night at the CU Softball Field in what was Concord's Mountain East Conference opener.

With the wins, Concord improved to 18-6 on the season and 2-0 in league play while Shepherd fell to 9-11 overall 0-2 conference competition.

The Mountain Lions offense was led by McDougall, sophomore shortstop Kristen Rose and sophomore catcher Alyssa Morris. McDougall finished the doubleheader batting 3-for-5 with two runs scored, a home run, four RBI and one walk. Rose was 2-for-6 with three runs scored and two stolen bases while Morris hit her fourth home run of the year in a 3-for-5 effort to along with two RBI and two walks.

Game One: Concord 5 – Shepherd 1 (Box Score)
Concord used two-run first and fifth innings and a phenomenal outing from Reid in the circle to pull away from Shepherd, 5-1, in the opener.

Shepherd scored the game's first run on a Savannah Snyder single that brought home Jess Mason in the first inning. However, Concord answered with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Rose led off the frame by getting hit by a pitch and was later plated on a McDougall double. McDougall followed her extra base hit up by scoring on an RBI groundout from freshman outfielder Lauren Lewis.

CU would hold a 2-1 lead until scoring two more runs in the fifth via McDougall's home run. Her deep shot, which occurred with Rose on base after a walk, to left field was her team-leading sixth home run of the year.

Concord added a final insurance run in the sixth inning when Reid crossed home on an RBI by Morris

After giving up the first inning run, which was unearned, Reid proceeded allow just two base runners over the final six innings. Reid's eight strikeouts matched a season-high as she improved to 9-2 on the season while lowering her ERA to 2.17.

Game Two: Concord 6 – Shepherd 3 (Box Score)
CU scored four runs in the first three to distance themselves from SU to ensure the doubleheader sweep in its 6-3 nightcap victory.

Concord's first run of the game came without the Mountain Lions getting a hit in the first inning. Rose walked to lead off the game and went on to steal second before advancing to third on a passed ball. She eventually scored on an RBI groundout by McDougall.

After leading off the second inning with a base on balls, freshman third baseman Courtney Purtell scored on an error by Shepherd. Later in the inning junior second baseman Whitney Carrigan hit a sacrifice fly to score freshman infielder Alayna Furr from third base to stretch the CU's lead to 3-0.

Concord continued its onslaught in the third inning off of Morris' home run that hooked just inside the right field foul pole for her first home run of the season at home.

The Mountain Lions added runs in the fifth and the sixth innings with Lewis smacking a double down the right field line that scored McDougall in the fifth and Reid adding a double of her own in the sixth to bring home junior first baseman Brantlea Wood.

Shepherd attempted a comeback in the seventh inning when Alexandra Witt hit a two-out three-run home run off of freshman relief pitcher Sarah Herndon. But the rally fell short as Herndon quickly recovered to end the game on a strikeout.

McDougall picked up her seventh win of the season after pitching five innings with two strikeouts and only allowing two hits. Herndon threw the in the final two innings, striking out four batters.

Morris, Furr, Wood, Reid, Lewis accounted for Concord's five hits in game two with Reid coming away with a team-high two RBI in the contest.

The Mountain Lions will finish their six-game homestand 2:00 p.m. Saturday vs. MEC foe Fairmont State.
