Concord Sweeps Lees-McRae, 6-0, 1-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ATHENS, W. Va. – The Concord University softball team completed a doubleheader sweep over Lees-McRae, 6-0 and 1-0, Wednesday afternoon at the CU Softball Field to improve to 16-6 on the season.

Wednesday marked the fifth and sixth times CU has shut out its opponent this season. Prior to Wednesday's victories Concord was 1-11 in its last six home-opening series.

At the plate, sophomore shortstop Kristen Rose finished the doubleheader 3-for-7 with three runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases. Rose is now 10-for-11 on stolen bases attempts this season. Junior first baseman/pitcher Lacey McDougall batted 3-for-5 with one run scored and two RBI while junior outfielder Jessica Seymour was 4-for-6 with a run scored and an RBI.

Game One: Concord 6 – Lees-McRae 1 (Box Score)
The Mountain Lions' offense pounded out 11 hits in the opening contest while the pitching duo of sophomore Allie Reid and freshman Sarah Herndon held LMC to no runs on just three hits in the shutout victory. Reid improved to 8-2 on the season after throwing four scoreless innings and Herndon picked up her first career save after throwing three effective innings in relief.

CU jumped on the board in the bottom of the first when junior first baseman/pitcher, and reigning Mountain East Conference hitter of the week, McDougall singled home Rose after Rose had singled and stole second to lead off the inning.

The Mountain Lions plated two more runs in the third via back-to-back doubles from McDougall and sophomore catcher Alyssa Morris. McDougall's double scored Rose and Morris' extra-base hit brought home McDougall, who now has a team-leading 27 RBI this season.

Concord stretched its lead out to 5-0 in the fourth by way of run-scoring singles from junior outfielder Jessica Seymour and Rose. Seymour's single scored junior second baseman Whitney Carrigan while Seymour was drove in on Rose's base hit.

The final run of game one came in the fifth when freshman outfielder Lauren Lewis, who led the inning off with a double, scored on freshman catcher Carly DiVirgilio's RBI-single.

Reid and Herndon both struck out three batters apiece with Reid allowing just one hit and Herndon scattering two.

For the game, Rose was 2-for-4, with two runs, two stolen bases and one RBI. McDougall was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with one run, two RBI and one walk. Also tallying a multi-hit opener was Seymour, who was 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI.

Game Two: Concord 1 – Lees-McRae 0 (Box Score)
Concord's victory in the nightcap was a pitching duel between McDougall and Lees-McRae's Celeste Shepperd.

The two teams combined for 10 hits with McDougall allowing just two hits. With the help of two double plays, McDougall faced the minimum of 21 batters to elevate her record to 6-1 on the season.

Rose scored the only run of game two in the bottom of the third when she sprinted home on a wild pitch. Prior to scoring, Rose walked and was advanced to third base on a McDougall double.

McDougall retired the last eight batters she faced in the game while also having streaks of six and seven consecutive hitters retired throughout the game. The Chesapeake, Va. native struck out three batters while only throwing 67 pitches in the complete-game shutout.

Seymour recorded her second multi-hit game of the afternoon on a 2-for-3 performance. Rose, McDougall, Morris, DiVirgilio, Carrigan and junior first baseman Brantlea Wood all registered one-hit outings.

Concord, winners of six of its last seven games, will begin Mountain East Conference action Saturday vs. Fairmont State with first pitch at 2:00 p.m.
