Sammi Webster scored a career-high 16 points as the Concord University women's basketball team defeated UVa.-Wise, 70-62, in its regular season finale Saturday at the Carter Center.
The victory over the Cavaliers was the 200th career win for head coach
Kenny Osborne at Concrd. Osborne has a career record of 212-211 in 14 total seasons of coaching . CU closes the regular season 10-16 overall 8-14 in Mountain East Conference play. UVa.-Wise falls to 9-17 overall and 5-17 in league play.
Webster shot 5-for-9 from the field (55.6 percent) and 6-for-8 from the free-throw line (75.0 percent). while also grabbing six rebounds in 32 minutes of action.
Junior forward
Andrea Bertrand scored 15 points on 70 percent shooting (7-for-10) and tallied nine rebounds to fall just short of the double-double. Over her last 10 contests, Bertrand is averaging 9.2 rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Leslie Mack scored 11 points off the bench for the Mountain Lions off of a 3-for-3 effort from the three-point range and a 2-for-2 showing from the free throw line.
UVa.-Wise began the game on 10-5 run over the first six minutes of play before Concord answered back with a 12-4 spurt to take a 17-14 lead with 8:47 remaining in the half. Webster highlighted the run with four points while junior guards
Rachel Artrip and
Melea Smith each connected on one three-pointer.
The Cavaliers would regain the lead, 20-19, with 6:40 remaining until halftime before the Mountain Lions ended the period on an 18-8 run thanks in part to eight points from Mack to take a 37-28 lead into the break.
Concord increased its lead to a game-high 12 points in the first minute of the second half. However, UVa.-Wise began its comeback bid by going on a 23-10 spurt over the preceding 10 minutes to pull ahead 51-50 with nine minutes left to play. The contest remained a back-and-forth affair over the next seven minutes with three ties and one lead change.
With the score knotted at 60-60 and only 2:28 remaining in the game, CU scored the next six points off of two free throws by freshman guard
Olivia Morgan, one from Webster and a crucial three-pointer from Artrip to take a 66-60 lead with under two minutes to play.
Morgan and Webster converted two free throws each in the final 30 seconds to secure the 70-62 win.
Junior forward
Jacqueline Kestner recorded a game-high 10 rebounds in addition to scoring five points and dishing out four assists. Morgan tallied career-highs in assists (nine) and minutes played (40). Smith and Artrip each chipped nine points.
Concord held advantages over UVa.-Wise in points in the paint (32-20), second chance points (10-7), bench points (20-5), rebounds (39-32), blocks (3-0) and field goal percentage (48.0-37.5).
CU shot 24-for-50 from the field and 35.3 percent (6-for-17) from three-point range.Â
UVa.-Wise was led by Taylor Sandidge, who scored a game-high 29 points on 10-for-12 shooting.
Concord will now turn its attention to the upcoming MEC Tournament. The Mountain Lions will play at Wheeling Jesuit in the opening round of the tournament 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
