Box Score 3 RALEIGH, N.C. – The Concord University softball team picked up three wins on day one of the Shaw University Softball Challenge Saturday in Raleigh, N.C. The wins improved CU's record to 9-2 on the season, giving Concord its best start to a season since the Mountain Lions moved up to NCAA Division II in 1995.
Concord started the day with a pair of five-inning victories by defeating St. Augustine's 12-0 and Bowie State 18-0. In the nightcap, The Mountain Lions defeated Slippery Rock, 4-3, on a walk-off single from freshman
Carly DiVirgilio.
Game One: Concord 12 – St. Augustine's 0 (Box Score)
Freshman pitcher
Sarah Herndon allowed just one hit to go with four strikeouts and went 3-for-3 with two runs scored at the plate to lead Concord to its 12-0, five-inning victory over St. Augustine's to start the day.
The Mountain Lions scored five runs in the first inning and proceeded to score three runs in each of the next two innings before finally adding its final run of the game in the fifth inning.
Eight different CU players recorded hits in the contest with Herndon, junior
Lacey McDougall, freshman
Lauren Lewis, and sophomore
Alyssa Morris all registering multi-hit games.
Morris also scored two runs in addition to two RBI which came off of her first home run of the season in the first inning. Freshman shortstop
Alayna Furr also plated a pair of runs for Concord in the victory.

Kelsey Lineberger all drove in a run as well.
Game Two: Concord 18 – Bowie State 0 (

The Mountain Lions carried over its momentum from game one into its second game as McDougall and DiVirgilio combined to drive in 10 runs while Herndon threw three more scoreless innings to help Concord claim its 18-run victory over Bowie State.
Concord earned runs in each inning including six in the second and seven more in the third to cruise past the Bulldogs.
For the game, McDougall was 2-for-2 with four runs scored, six RBI and a pair of home runs. Four of her RBI came off of a grand slam in the second inning. While McDougall provided the power, DiVirgilio drove in her runs off of a double and a triple in a 2-for-3 performance.
Lewis and Furr came away with solid outings as well against the Bulldogs. Both players had three-hit games with Lewis also producing three RBI, three runs and two stolen bases.
Lineberger capped off the scoring barrage with a home run in the fifth inning, her first as a Mountain Lion.
After striking out four batters in three nearly spotless innings, Herndon (2-2) exited the game with Concord leading 15-0 for junior
Brantlea Wood, who closed out the triumph by striking out five batters and allowing just one hit in two innings.
Game Three: Concord 4 – Slippery Rock 3 (Box Score)
Sophomore pitcher
Allie Reid extended her record to 5-0 on the season after scattering three runs over seven innings in the complete-game victory.
With the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, DiVirgilio provided the late-game heroics with a run-scoring single to complete CU's perfect day.
DiVirgilio was one of five players, along with Morris, Rose, Furr and Lineberger to record two-hit games vs. The Rock.

Concord will look to continue its early-season dominance Sunday when it closes out the Shaw Challenge against Seton Hill and Claflin.
