ATHENS, W. Va. – Senior pitcher
Ryan Weatherholtz gave up just three runs over eight innings and freshman outfielder
Eli Flynn drove in two runs on three hits as the Concord University baseball team earned an 8-3 victory over Pitt-Johnstown Saturday afternoon at Anderson Field.
The victory evens the Mountain Lions' record on the season at 2-2 overall. Pitt-Johnstown drops to 0-4 with the loss.
Weatherholtz (1-0) picked up his first win by striking out four UPJ batters while surrendering no walks and scattering 12 hits on 125 pitches in eight innings of work. The Manassas, Va. native allowed just one hit over his final three innings pitched. Senior relief pitcher
Tim Leather made his second appearance of the year, tossing a perfect ninth inning.
Making his first collegiate start, Flynn went 3-for-4 with two RBI, one run scored, a stolen base and a triple.
As was the case a season ago, senior first baseman
Joey Miller provided more than enough power for the Mountain Lions on a 2-for-4, two-run, two-RBI afternoon that included his first home run of the year, a towering shot in the third inning.
Junior outfielder
Ryan Johnston collected his second multi-hit game of the season Saturday, going an impressive 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
With Pitt-Johnstown ahead 2-0 through the top of the first inning, the Mountain Lions began their comeback with one run in their half of the first when Johnston scored on a UPJ error before taking the lead with two more in the third thanks to Miller's homer to left field which plated Johnston, who had reached base earlier in the inning via a single.
Concord continued its offensive surge with three more runs in the fourth inning off of RBI hits from Flynn and senior catcher
Brandon Costa, who later scored on a wild pitch to put CU up 6-2.
Pitt-Johnstown got one run back in the fifth inning, but the combination of Weatherholtz and Leather held the UPJ bats in check for the remainder of the game while the Concord offense posted two insurance runs in the eighth by way of run-producing at-bats from Flynn and sophomore designated hitter
Joe Camp to secure the 8-3 triumph.
Other Concord standouts in its 2014 home-opening win included sophomore shortstop
Brad Sullivan and sophomore outfielder
Andrew Seigel. Sullivan produced a pair of hits while Seigel stole his second base of the year.
The Mountain Cats were led in the loss by second baseman Jake Werner, who went 3-for-5 with one run and one stolen base. John Fees (0-2) took the loss for UPJ after allowing six runs on 10 hits in five innings.
Concord will look to complete the three-game sweep of Pitt-Johnstown with a pair of wins Sunday when the teams meet for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
