Baseball to Host Pitt-Johnstown

ATHENS, W. Va. – After completing a three-game series at Mount Olive, the Concord University baseball team is set to return home to host Pitt-Johnstown for a three-game series this weekend in what will be the first contests of 2014 at Anderson Field.

The Mountain Lions and Mountain Cats will play a single nine-inning game 2:30 p.m. Saturday before completing a doubleheader (one nine-inning / one seven-inning game) starting at noon on Sunday.

Records and Standings
• Concord enters its home opener at 1-2 overall after taking one out of three game in its season-opening series over the nationally-ranked Trojans.

• Pitt-Johnstown lost all three of its games at UNC-Pembroke to start the year.

The Series
• Since 1997, Concord is 15-10 against Pitt-Johnstown. In 2013, the Mountain Lions swept a doubleheader from UPJ 3-1, 6-3.

Mountain Lion Notes
• Sophomore designated hitter Joe Camp, junior outfielder Ryan Johnston and senior first baseman Joey Miller were all named to the Tino Martinez Division II Player of the Year watch list.

• Senior outfielder Bret Blevins was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's Atlantic Region Hitter of the Week after going 5-for-13 (.385) with three runs scored, four RBI, one double and one stolen base against Mount Olive.

• Blevins now needs just two stolen bases to tie former Concord great Keith Morrisroe Concord career record of 61.

• Other offensive standouts from Concord's opening series included junior second baseman Jerrod Groves and junior third baseman T.J. Brockway. Groves batted .600 (6-for-10) with two doubles while Brockway came away with four hits and three RBI.

• Groves is on a five-game hitting streak dating back to last season.

• Concord ace senior Ryan Weatherholtz began his final collegiate season with a quality start against Mount Olive, allowing just three runs (two earned) while striking out two batters over five innings pitched. He left the contest, which CU eventually won 11-10 in extra innings, with Concord leading 5-3.

• Senior relief pitcher Tim Leather secured the season-opening win over Mount Olive after coming on in the sixth inning and proceeding to allow just three hits and two runs to help CU to the one-run victory. The outing was the longest of Leather's Concord career.

• In his first collegiate appearance, freshman pitcher Nate Werner produced a scoreless inning after striking out three batters and walking another in Concord's second game of the season vs. Mount Olive.

Scouting The Mountain Cats
• Jake Werner went 6-for-12 in three games to begin the season with one run scored.

• Jake Stern, Dillion Boyer, Brett Marabito and Kyle Morrow accounted for all of UPJ's RBI over its first three games with one each.

• Derek Younker is coming off of an 8-4 season in which he pitched a team-high 71.1 innings with 41 strikeouts and five complete games. Younker (0-1) gave up eight runs in four innings in his first start of the season.

• After being a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference since 2006, Pitt-Johnstown joined the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference prior to the start of the 2013-14 academic year and will compete out of the PSAC's Western Division in baseball.

The Head Coaches
• Andrew Wright is in his fourth season at Concord. Since taking over the program, Wright has guided the Mountain Lions to a pair of conference titles and a record of 90-75.

• Todd Williams has been at the helm of the Mountain Cats for 17 seasons in which he has compiled an overall record of 401-324-3.
