MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
• Due to inclement weather throughout the region last week, Concord was able to play just one of its games, an 82-68 victory over West Virginia State. CU's scheduled contest at Charleston was postponed to Feb. 26.
• The win improved CU's record to 8-16 overall and 5-13 in MEC play.
• After losing two of its last three games, Fairmont State enters the Carter Center at 16-8 overall and 11-7 in league games.
• Shepherd, which plays UVa.-Wise Thursday, begins play this week ranked second in the conference standings at 17-7 overall and 12-6 in the MEC.
• If the season ended today, Concord and Fairmont State would play each other in the opening round of the MEC Tournament.
• The Falcons have won two consecutive games over Concord, including a 71-66 victory in Fairmont on Jan. 11.
• Sophomore guard
Cam Shannon paced the Mountain Lions in the loss with a then career-high 18 points.
• CU kept the game close, and even led by five points with 5:48 left in the second half, despite shooting just 35.2 percent from the field.
• The Mountain Lions are coming off of one of its finest defensive efforts of the season in their 14-point victory over West Virginia State.
• Concord forced the Yellow Jackets into 23 turnovers while also holding them to a miniscule 38.2 shooting percentage from the field.
• The 23 turnovers were the most forced by CU this season while the 68 points allowed were the third fewest on the year by the Mountain Lions.
• CU was led to the win by the quartet of freshman guard
Aaron Miller, sophomore forward
Terry Hopewell, junior guard
Mike Boyd and Shannon.
• Miller came off the bench for a career-high 18 points, Hopewell secured a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds, Boyd scored 16 points with Shannon rounding out the group on a 15-point, six-steal effort.
• Miller has provided quality points off the bench recently for Concord, averaging 11 points per game (ppg) over CU's last four games.
• Even more impressive is Miller's shooting percentages over the stretch. He has made 60.7 percent (17-for-28) of his shots overall and is also hitting on 60 percent (9-for-15) of his three-point attempts.
• Hopewell's double-double performance was his second of the season. The 6 foot-8 inch shot blocker also rejected four attempts to elevate his season total to 30, the fourth most in the MEC.
• With 338 career assists to his name, Boyd needs just four more assists to move into fourth place all-time in CU history.
• On the season, Boyd has passed a team-high 100 assists (4.2 per game) in addition to also leading the team in scoring (15.0 ppg), shooting (55.0 percent) and steals (1.3 per game).
• Junior guard
Paul Byrd continues to rebound his position well with 13 in his last two games (6.5 per game).
• The Mountain Lions currently average just 13.7 turnovers per game. If CU maintains that average through the end of the year it would mark the second fewest turnovers committed per game by a CU squad dating back to the 2005-06 season.
• CU is the third best three-point shooting team in the MEC, having made 35.9 percent of its attempts.
• Fairmont State leads the MEC in defensive field goal percentage, holding opponents to just 42.9 percent from the floor.
