Concord Rallies to Beat West Virginia Wesleyan, 77-70

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Four different players scored at least 10 points as the Concord University women's basketball fought off a late deficit to down West Virginia Wesleyan 77-70 Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference.

The Mountain Lions improved to 3-3 on the season while running their conference record to 3-1. WVWC is 0-6 this season and 0-4 in the MEC.

Freshman guard Danielle Catron recorded a career-high 16 points on 8-for-10 shooting from the field and senior forward Jacqueline Kestner tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds to pace CU.

With the contest hanging in the balance and CU facing a 70-69 deficit with nine seconds remaining in the contest, Kestner collected an offensive rebound off a CU miss and was fouled by Kiki DeVane. The Blountville, Tennessee calmly hit two free throws to make it a 71-70 game in favor of Concord.

West Virginia Wesleyan was assessed double technical and senior guard Melea Smith connected on all four of her free throws, putting Concord up 75-70. Senior forward Rachel Artrip assured a CU victory by nailing two additional free throws.

Both teams opened up the game by swapping the lead four teams over a five-minute duration. CU pulled ahead 17-9 with 10:10 left in the first half after the score was tied 7-7 early on. Sophomore forward Alley Odell scored four points for the Mountain Lions when they opened up the eight point lead. Catron, Kestner and freshman Lindsey Overbey each contributed two points during the run.

The Bobcats answered with a 12-5 run to close CU's lead to 22-21 with 6:30 remaining in the first half. CU and WVWC played even over the final six minutes of the first half and the game was tied 38-38 at the intermission.

Catron and senior guard Melea Smith, who registered 15 points, each scored six points in the closing stages of the first half to lead the Maroon and Gray offense.

The second half featured seven lead changes and four ties before Concord was able to pull away with six straight successful conversions from charity stripe in the final nine seconds.

Junior forward Kylie Molisee also finished in double figures with 12 points while Catron's 16 points and Odell's seven points helped CU score 29 bench points, a season-high.
Concord shot 41 percent (27-for-65) from the field and had more assists (16-13) than WVWC.

The Bobcats were led by Allison Freiermuth who scored 13 points and had 11 rebounds.

The Mountain Lions will look to extend their three-game winning streak at the Rollins Tournament against the host Rollins University December 15.
