Concord Downed in Overtime by Glenville State, 83-81

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University men's basketball team fell in its second consecutive overtime game as Glenville State outlasted CU 83-81 in Mountain East Conference play at the Waco Center Thursday night.

The Mountain Lions (4-3, 1-2 MEC) got a spark off the bench as junior guard Rob Reed posted a career-high 22 points to lead all scorers in the contest. Reed converted 9-of-13 field goals and also connected on four three-point field goals.

Concord led the first eight minutes of the game until GSC (5-2, 3-0 MEC) tied the contest at 15-15 with 11:50 remaining in the first half. Senior guard Paul Byrd, junior forward Terry Hopewell and junior forward Jametrius Wade compiled 13 of Concord's first 15 points.

After the tie at 15-15, Concord regained the lead and did not relinquish it until the Pioneers took a 32-31 lead with 3:09 remaining in the first half. Despite trailing for most of the half, GSC took a 37-35 lead into the halftime break.

The Pioneers ran its advantage to 10 points, 52-42 with 14:02 left in regulation.

The Mountain Lions outscored Glenville State 14-3 over the next four minutes to regain a 56-55 lead. Sophomore guard Aaron Miller scored six of his 18 points during the run while Wade added six points as well.

Over the final nine minutes of the game, the teams traded the lead seven times.

In the closing seconds of regulation and down by two, Concord was able to draw an offensive foul against the Pioneers. On the offensive end, Wade drew a foul with nine seconds left. He stepped up to the line and nailed both free throws to send the game to overtime.

In the extra session, neither team led by more than two points. The Mountain Lions led 81-80 after a jumper by senior guard Mike Boyd with 2:16 remaining. The score remained the same until the Pioneers drilled a three-pointer with 44 seconds left that would end being the decisive shot in the game.

Wade collected his second double-double in three games and his third of the season by finishing with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Hopewell also tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Concord owned a distinct edge in rebounding as they pulled down 41 boards to GSC's 30. The Mountain Lions also shot higher than 50 percent (31-for-61) for the sixth time this season. CU also held advantages in points in the paint (38-18) and second chance points (8-5).

The Mountain Lions will play concludes its early-season seven game road trip 4:00 p.m. Sunday at West Virginia Wesleyan.
