URBANA, Ohio – Led by two players with double-doubles the Concord University women's basketball team earned its first win of the season over Urbana, 64-57, at the Grimes Center Monday night in Mountain East Conference play.
Concord improves to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the MEC while Urbana falls to 0-4 and 0-2 against league foes.
Senior forward
Jacqueline Kestner scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to record her fourth straight double-double to start the season. Junior forward
Kylie Molisee poured in 14 points and brought down a career-high 16 rebounds.
Kestner is the first Concord player to record four straight double-doubles since Jolysa Brown did it in seven straight games from February 13 to March 2, 2012.
UU jumped out to a 9-6 lead on Concord through the first six minutes of play. A 15-4 Concord run over the next five minutes gave the Mountain Lions a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The scoring spurt was sparked by sophomore point guard
Olivia Morgan who scored eight of her career-high 12 points during the run.
Freshman guard
Marta Moix got the run started by draining a three-pointer and Molisee contributed four points during the run.
Concord led 26-15 with 6:39 left in the first half before Urbana cut the CU lead to 32-26 at halftime.
The Blue Knights opened the second half on a 10-5 run as Concord held onto a 37-36 lead with 16:20 remaining in the game. The Mountain Lions answered with another 15-4 run of their own to open up a game-high 12-point lead, 52-40.
Senior forward
Rachel Artrip (five) and Kestner (seven) combined for 12 of the 15 points.
Once Concord extended the lead to 12 with 8:31 left in the contest, the closest Urbana would get was 52-45 as CU executed from the free-throw line late in the game to seal the victory.
The Mountain Lions were 6-for-9 from the charity stripe in the final 1:45 of the contest.
Morgan fell just shy of her first career double-double. The Richmond, Virginia had had a personal-best nine rebounds to go along with her 12 points.
CU held Urbana to 32.8 percent shooting (19-for-58) and 17.6 percent (3-for-17) from the behind the arc.
Concord also held advantages in rebounds (51-45), points off turnovers (18-6) and second chance points (19-8).
Next up for the Mountain Lions will be the final game of its three-game road trip against MEC rival Glenville State December 4 at 5:30 p.m.
