Box Score FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Behind a career day from junior running back
Calvinaugh Jones, the Concord University football team cruised to a 45-21 over Fairmont State in Mountain East Conference action at Duvall-Rosier Field.
The 24-point win keeps the Mountain Lions undefeated this season with a 5-0 overall mark and 4-0 record in MEC play. Fairmont State drops to 2-3 overall and in the conference.
A year after running over Fairmont State with 209 yards and two touchdowns, Jones followed it up with 144 yards and three touchdowns Saturday. Jones set a new personal-best by finding the endzone three times.
Concord jumped out in front of Fairmont State four minutes into the game when sophomore quarterback
Brian Novak found junior wide receiver
Ryan Stewart for his ninth receiving touchdown this season. Fairmont State answered the bell by knotting the game up 7-7 on its next possession.
CU scored on its next two possessions with a 20-yard run from redshirt freshman running back
Jamal Petty and 17-yard rush by Jones. Jones' touchdown was set up by a 46-yard punt return from junior quarterback
Jermeil Douse. After Jones' score, Concord held a 21-7 edge in the first quarter.
FSU scored to start the second quarter, but it would be the last time the Falcons found the endzone until late in the fourth quarter.
After a series of punts from both teams, Concord scored to end the first half when Jones rumbled in from 11 yards out to give CU a 28-14 halftime advantage.
Out of the intermission, Novak led the Mountain Lions offense down the field where he found redshirt freshman tight end
Jordan Bryant who caught his first collegiate touchdown, a 13-yard pass.
With 12 minutes remaining in the third quarter Concord found itself up 35-14.
After senior cornerback
Mike Carey intercepted his eighth career pass and his third in two years against Fairmont State, Jones found the endzone one play later from seven yards away to put the Mountain Lions up 42-14 with nine minutes left in the game.
Junior kicker
Andy Ellington added a fourth quarter 32-yard field goal before the Falcons added a touchdown on their last possession making the final score 45-21 in favor of Concord.
Jones finished the game with 6.4 yards per rush. In all five games this season, the Glen Burnie, Maryland native has averaged at least five yards a carry.
Novak threw for 201 yards on 15-of-27 passing and two touchdowns.
A week after scoring a touchdown on a blocked kick junior linebacker
Cade Rogers saved a touchdown as he intercepted a pass in the endzone. Additionally, senior defensive back
Mishawn Cummings also picked off his first career pass at Concord.
The Maroon and Gray have intercepted three passes in three of its five games this season.
Senior defensive linemen
Keith Ferguson and
Anthony Pyle and junior defensive end
Ervin Moore all registered sacks for the Mountain Lions defense. With a quarterback takedown, Pyle set a career high with four sacks on the season.
Pyle also moved into a tie for ninth at Concord with seven career sacks joining Moore on the career sacks list, who is third all-time with 12 sacks.
CU will return to Callaghan Stadium October 11 to host Urbana on Homecoming. Kickoff is at 2:00 p.m. Â Â Â
