Concord Loses in OT to Wheeling Jesuit

Box Score ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team fell to Mountain East Conference foe Wheeling Jesuit 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Anderson Field.

After the Cardinals struck first with a goal in the 25th minute, Concord (1-11-1, 1-8 MEC) answered with two goals in a three-minute stretch. The first CU goal came from junior midfielder Joe Sweet, who received a crossing pass from junior defender Jared Garlow and was able to lob the ball over WJU's goalkeeper for his first goal of the season.

In the 32nd minute, freshman midfielder Royale Johnson scored his fourth goal of the season off of a penalty kick after the Cardinals committed a handball violation in the penalty area. Concord held a 2-1 advantage at halftime.

The Mountain Lions were able to keep the game-tying goal out of the net until the 87th minute when Wheeling Jesuit (7-5-2, 5-4-1 MEC) did tie the game up 2-2.

Six minutes into overtime, Wheeling Jesuit was able to find the back of the net and end game as Concord lost 3-2.

Junior goalkeeper Mitchell Thompson made seven saves for the Mountain Lions while senior defender Cole Cloonan, Johnson, Sweet and junior defender Alex Williams all had shots on goal
for CU.

For the game, Wheeling Jesuit held advantages in total shots (15-10) and shots on goal (10-4) while Concord held a slight edge in corner kicks (6-5).
