Box Score 2 ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball teams took two matches from Davis & Elkins and WVU Tech Tuesday night at the Carter Center in its home triangular match.
With the wins Concord improves to 12-10 this season and have now won four of its last five matches.
The Mountain Lions were paced over the two matches by senior middle hitter
Sarah Jones who had 18 kills and 12 blocks over the two matches. Freshman setter
Casey Mandeville also had 26 combined assists for the Mountain Lions on the night.
Match 1: Davis & Elkins (25-19, 25-23, 25-22)The Mountain Lions coasted to a 25-19 win in the first set as they led during the entirety. However, the second set featured 11 ties and six lead changes as neither team held a lead of more than three points. CU was able to score four of the game's final six points to edge past the Senators and take a 2-0 lead.
After falling behind 20-17 in the third set, the Mountain Lions assured they would not need a fourth set to defeat the Senators as stormed back to win 25-22. Of the final eight points CU scored, freshman outside hitter
Lisette Roldan recorded three of her team-high 12 kills during the stretch.
During the second set, senior middle hitter
Brytni Willis recorded her 1,000
th kill, joining Jones and two others on the prestigious list. Roldan recorded a career best with 12 kills and it was just the second time in her career she had 10 or more kills in a match.
Jones hit .533 against Davis & Elkins while finishing with 10 kills. Mandeville and senior setter
Nikki McMillan both recorded 14 assists in the sweep.
Match 2: WVU Tech (25-13, 25-17, 25-12)Concord was in control of the match throughout as they only trailed twice in the whole match.
The Mountain Lions had two sets of which they hit above .400 as a team against the Golden Bears. During the first set they hit .417 in committing just two errors and followed it up with a .455 hitting percentage in the third set, also committing just two errors.
Sophomore middle hitter
Lauren Richardson paced CU with nine kills in 12 attempts and did not commit an error. Richardson also had five blocks during the nightcap. Jones played an all-around stellar game by coming away with eight kills, eight digs and tied a season high with seven blocks.
Mandeville finished with 12 assists in the win and nine different Concord players recorded kills.
Concord will continue its nine-game homestand Friday when they play Mountain East Conference rival Charleston at 2:00 p.m.
