Concord Carries 4-0 Record on the Road Versus Fairmont State

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University football puts its unblemished record on the line as it travels to Fairmont State, a week after scoring 61 points in a win over West Liberty.

MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
• A 4-0 start to the 2014 season has landed Concord in the d2football.com poll coming in at 24.

• The Mountain Lions took command of last week's game against West Liberty after allowing an opening-quarter touchdown by the Hilltoppers.

• Not only did the Concord offense showcase its abilities, but the CU special teams played a big role in defeating WLU 61-24.

• For the second consecutive week the Mountain Lions scored at least one special teams touchdown.

• Against the Hilltoppers, junior quarterback Jermeil Douse returned a punt for six points to get CU on the scoreboard in the first quarter.

• Douse is just one of three playersin the Mountain East Conference players to return a punt this season.

• Later in the half junior wide receiver Tiko Henderson broke through to block CU's first punt since last season versus West Virginia State. Junior linebacker Cade Rogers pounced on the loose ball for a touchdown.

• The blocked punt was set up by a couple of key sacks by the defense including one by junior defensive end Ervin Moore who leaped into third place in career sacks at Concord with the quarterback takedown.

• The Concord offense had no shortage of production on the afternoon as three CU rushers gained at least 75 yards on the ground.

• Junior Calvinaugh Jones paced the running backs with 108 yards while redshirt freshman Jamal Petty gained 92 yards and redshirt freshman Ethan Richardson had 77 yards.

• Dating back to 2010, Concord has never had three players exceed 75 yards on the ground and the last time Concord had two runners gain at 75 yards on the ground was when Jones and senior running back Ben Nester both ran for over 100 yards against West Virginia Wesleyan last season.

• The 76-yard touchdown run that Richardson broke off against West Liberty was the longest run by any MEC player this season and the longest rush by any Concord player since Brian Kennedy had a 65-yard run against UNC-Pembroke during the 2010 season.

• After catching his eighth touchdown pass versus West Liberty junior wide receiver Ryan Stewart is tied for second in Division II in scoring receptions.

• In all, six different Concord players scored touchdowns against West Liberty inlcuding Petty and Richardson who tallied their first collegiate touchdowns.

• The six players that notched touchdowns are the most since five players found the endzone against Lenoir-Rhyne during the 2010 season.

• Sophomore quarterback Brian Novak leaped to number one in Division II in passer efficiency after tossing for 223 yards and two touchdowns against the Hilltoppers.

• Novak's passer efficiency is at 196.3 while he has guided the third-best scoring offense in the nation, averaging 51.8 points per game.

• Not only has the Concord offensive line opened up holes for the CU running game, they have also kept Novak off the ground this season, giving up an MEC-low two sacks this season.
Concord is on pace to give up less sacks than last season when they gave up just 12 sacks in 11 games.

•Defensively, CU sits 28th in the nation in turnover margin.

• The Mountain Lions have intercepted seven passess, tied for first in the MEC and have recovered four fumbles, good enough for second in the conference.

• Addtionally, CU's turnover margin of +5 is ranked second in the MEC.

• The overall team defense for the Mountain Lions has been stellar during the 2014 season.

• Despite not having a tackler ranked in the top 30 in tackles, Concord is fourth in the MEC in sacks with nine.

• Senior defensive end Anthony Pyle is fourth with 2.5 sacks while Moore and junior linebacker Nick Ortiz are 10th in the MEC with two sacks.

• With the defensive front doing a nice job of putting its opponents behind the down and distance to go, the CU secondary has given up just six passing touchdowns, second-best in the conference.

• CU's redzone numbers, both offensively and defensively is among the league's best.

• The Mountain Lions have scored on 75 percentMEC, of their redzone attempts, ranking second in the MEC while their opponents have only converted on 66 percent of their trips inside the 20, second-best in the league.

• The Mountain Lions will carry a five-game winning streak against the Falcons into Saturday's matchup.

• Concord has outscored Fairmont State 151-60 over that time period, having won by an average of 18.8 points.

• Jones had a career game versus the Falcons  last season in Athens, West Virginia. The Glen Burnie, Maryland native ran for a career-high 209 yards and two touchdowns as CU cruised to a 34-17 win.

• Two other Mountain Lions had stellar days against FSU in last season's contest.

• Senior cornerbacker Mike Carey intercepted a career-best two passes while junior kicker Andy Ellington kicked a then-personal best 48-yard field goal against the Falcons.

• Concord allowed just 107 passing yards to Fairmont State last season.

• Fairmont State's offense is led by sophomore quarterback Cooper Hibbs, who has passed for seven touchdowns to go along with 837 yards.

• The Falcons have won their last two games over Glenville State and W.Va. State to improve to 2-2 this season.

A CONCORD WIN WOULD...
•  A Concord win would give the Mountain Lions a six-game winning streak over Fairmont State, tied for the longest active streak against an opponent.

•  A Concord win would give head coach Garin Justice his 27th win, sixth most all-time at CU.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
6.4- Yards per rush for Calvinaugh Jones, second best among MEC ball carriers with at least 60 carries.

14- Number of Mountain Lions who have made at least one tackle for loss through four games.
