ATHENS, W. Va. – Junior forward
Andrea Bertrand scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Concord University women's basketball team to a 68-62 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan Thursday night at the Carter Center in Mountain East Conference play.
The victory improves Concord's record to 9-8 overall and 7-6 in MEC play. West Virginia Wesleyan falls to 2-15 overall and 0-13 in league play with the loss. The win was also head coach
Kenny Osborne's 199th victory at Concord.
Bertrand, who now needs just 83 points to become the 15th 1,000-point scorer in Concord history, went 11-for-17 from the field while also making three steals. Her seven rebounds marked the fifth time in the last six contests that she has pulled down at least seven rebounds in a game.
Junior guard
Sissy Wagner went for 16 points and six assists. Wagner overcame a 4-for-11 shooting performance by connecting on 7-of-8 free throw attempts. On the year she is shooting 83.1 percent from the foul line. Wagner also passed former CU great Samm Nester for seventh all-time in career assists. She now needs just five more assists to move into fifth place in Concord history.
Junior forward
Jacqueline Kestner registered a solid all-around performance with seven points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 39 minutes of playing time. Junior guard
Rachel Artrip chipped in 12 points for her third double-digit scoring effort in Concord's last five games.
The Mountain Lions trailed for the opening four minutes of the contest until a 10-2 Concord run over the following four minutes pushed CU ahead 14-8 with 12:04 remaining in the period. The run featured four points from Bertrand and two apiece from the trio of Kestner, Wagner and junior guard
Ashley Brown. Concord would not trail for the rest of the half and headed into the break leading by five points at 34-29.
West Virginia Wesleyan refused to go away in the second half as the Bobcats stayed in the game with mini runs every time Concord seemed poised to pull away. However, the Mountain Lions continually thwarted Wesleyan's comeback attempts with timely offense from Bertrand and Wagner to come away with the six-point victory, its four straight win over the Bobcats. The duo combined for 26 of Concord's 34 second-half points.
For the game, Concord shot 38.7 percent (24-for-62) from the field and 65.2 percent (15-for-23) from the free throw line. CU held edges over Wesleyan in steals (6-5), blocks (5-0), points off of turnovers (11-9), points in the paint (36-32) and second chance points (19-13).
West Virginia Wesleyan was led by Brittany Williams, who recorded a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
