Concord Seeks to Keep Winning Streak Alive vs. West Virginia State

ATHENS, W.Va. - After wins over Fairmont and Shepherd, the Concord University women's basketball will bring a two-game winning streak into its next two games Saturday vs. W. Va. State and Monday at local rival Bluefield State.

MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
• Concord's wins over Fairmont State and Shepherd improved its record to 6-6 overall and to 4-5 in Mountain East Conferece play, which slots them eighth in the  league standings.

• West Virginia State owns an 11-4 overall record and is 7-2 in MEC competition. Meahwhile, Bluefield State is 6-9 this season.

• CU leads the all-time series vs. West Virginia State 23-16 and 27-12 vs. Bluefield State.

• With wins over both teams, Concord would surpass last season's win total of seven.

• Junior forward Jacqueline Kestner scored a career-high 20 points against the Fighting Falcons and followed it up with a 19-point effort against Shepherd by making a career-high five 3s against the Rams.

• Junior guard Sissy Wagner entered the all-time assists list at CU for her career after passing out a career-high 12 helpers against Shepherd. She now sits ninth all-time with 216.

• With four more assists, Wagner will pass Jessical Walls (2000-04).
Looking depper into all-time career marks at CU, senior center Sammi Webster needs just seven blocks to move into 10th all-time. She has rejected 32 shots in her four seasons at Concord.

• Junior forward Andrea Bertrand extended her streak of consecutive games of scoring at least 10 points to 15 with games of 25, 11 and 16 points in her last three contests.

• Against SU, Bertrand also matched a career high with five steals while registering a block and a collecting a team-high nine rebounds.

• Since making her season debut against UC Jan. 9, sophomore guard Leslie Mack has been a spark off the bench for Concord. She made a crucial three-pointer against Fairmont State to propel CU to a win.

• In the contest at Shepherd, Mack scored a season-high 11 points in 14 minutes.

• Three different CU players begin play this weekend ranked in various statistical categories in the MEC.

• Webster ranks third in field goal percentage at .616 (45-of-73) and 10th in block shots per game (.8).

• Bertrand is seated third in points per game (18.5), ninth in field goal percentage at .497 (90-of-181) and sixth in offensive rebounding (3.2).

• Likewise, Wagner appears near the top in a myriad of categories. She leads the MEC in assists per game (5.8) and is ranked in the top-10 in free-throw percentage (fourth / 86.2), three-point percentage (ninth / 40.5), assist-to-turnover ratio (third / 1.88) and minutes per game (fifth / 35.5).

• As a team, Concord is fifth in the league in turnovers forced. They have made the opposition make 224 miscues so far this season.

• Not only does CU force its opponents into mistakes, but the Mountain Lions take care of the ball themselves; ranking second in turnover margin at 2.67.

• Over the last five games, Concord has only committed an average of 13.0 turnovers per game while forcing the opposition into 20.2 turnovers in that same time.

• The turnover differential has allowed CU to outscore its opposition on points off turnovers in all but one game over last six.

• Additionally, the Mountain Lions come away with 8.1 steals per game. Junior guard Rachel Artrip leads the team with 1.8 thefts per contest.

• On the offensive end, Concord has shot 45.2 percent from three-point range over their last three game including a 7-for-10 outing against Fairmont State.

• Earlier in the season in Concord's 72-59 win vs. Bluefield State, Artrip led CU in scoring with 20 points on 75 percent shooting (8-of-12).

• Freshman center Alley Odell scored a career-high seven points against BSC in the first meeting. 

• W.Va. State coach David Smith will be seeking his 600 career win Saturday.

A CONCORD WIN WOULD...
• A win over West Virginia State would push Concord's MEC record to 5-5 and elevate their overall record 7-6.

• A win Bluefield State would make it a season sweep for Concord over the Lady Blues as Concord defeated BSC, 72-59 at the Carter Center on Nov. 18.

• A win over both WVSU and BSC would give the Mountain Lions eight wins this season, surpassing last season's total.
