MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
• The Mountain Lions open play this weekend at 5-10 overall and 2-7 in MEC play.
• Concord, which has lost eight games this season by eight points or less, most recently dropped a 97-94 decision in overtime at Shepherd University on Jan. 13. CU forced overtime after erasing an 11-point second-half deficit.
• West Virginia State comes to Athens at 6-6 overall and 3-6 in league play. The Yellow Jackets have won three out of their last four games including an 81-76 victory over Urbana last weekend.
• Concord owns a slim 34-33 lead over West Virginia State in the all-time series. CU has won five straight games over the Yellow Jackets dating back to the 2010-11 season.
• One of the keys to Concord's near comeback victory on the road at Shepherd was junior guard
Mike Boyd making a pair of free throws to tie the game with just five seconds remaining in regulation.
• Boyd's clutch free throws continued a trend for CU in 2013-14 that has seen the Mountain Lions shoot 88.4 percent (38-for-43) from the foul line in the final three minutes of the second half.
• Concord continues to be one of the best teams in the league this season in terms of three-point field goal percentage; CU currently ranks third in league at 36.6 percent (107-for-292), trailing only West Liberty (42.8 percent) and West Virginia Wesleyan (41.2 percent).
• Concord is 4-2 this season when leading at halftime.
• Over his last four games, sophomore guard
Cam Shannon has produced per game averages of 15 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals while shooting 48.7 percent (19-for-39) from the field and 55.6 percent (5-for-9) from three-point range.
• Against Shepherd, Shannon scored a career-high 21 points to go with a near personal-best of six rebounds.
• On the season, Shannon is shooting 48.4 percent (15-for-31) from three-point territory and 79.5 percent (35-for-44) from the free throw line which slots him fifth and 12th in the MEC in the respective categories.
• Other Mountain Lions among the MEC's best include Boyd in assists (9th / 4.1 apg), field goal percentage (14th / 54.0 percent) and scoring (22nd / 14.3 ppg); sophomore forward
Terry Hopewell in blocks (3rd / 1.4 per game) and field goal percentage (13th / 54.8 percent) and sophomore forward
Nick Moyer in rebounds (17th / 5.5 per game).
• Moyer is coming off of an eight-point, 13-rebound effort against Shepherd. Moyer's big night on the glass marked just the seventh time since the 2010-11 season that a CU player had grabbed at least 13 rebounds in a game.
• Junior guard A.J. Williams has scored at least 18 points in a game twice in Concord's last three contests; he went for 18 vs. Charleston and 19 against Shepherd. On the year, Williams is averaging 11.3 ppg.
• After playing in just two of Concord's first 11 games, freshman guard
Aaron Miller has come off the bench in each of the Mountain Lions' past four outings to provide an offensive spark. Over the last four games, Miller has made 10-of-16 three-point attempts and is averaging 10.5 ppg.
• With 300 career assists, Boyd already ranks 13th on Concord's all-time list. He needs just 42 more crack the top-10 and 204 more to tie current head coach and, former Concord great,
Kent McBride for fourth place all-time.
• West Virginia State features two of the league's top-10 scorers in Anton Hutchins (5th / 18.6 ppg) and Dominic Phillips (8th / 17.9 ppg). Phillips also ranks seventh in the league in assists (4.3 apg) while Hutchins in the conference's 13th leading rebounder (5.9 rpg).
• As a team, the Yellow Jackets are the third highest scoring team in the conference at 86.5 ppg.
