Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior
Abby Barber scored a pair of goals, but it wasn't quite enough as the Concord University women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision in overtime at Converse College Friday night in Spartanburg, S.C. The match was Concord's season-opener.
The two-score game was the first of Barber's career.
"The girls played well tonight, we just have to get better at finishing the chances we create," Head Coach Stefani Workman said. "This game could have went to either team tonight! Converse was a technical team, we gave them one to many chances and they took advantage. All the mistakes we made tonight are fixable. We will be on the pitch tomorrow at practice working on getting better for the next game."
Barber, an all-conference honoree in 2012, totaled four shots on the game. Her first score broke a 0-0 tie at the 11:24 mark in the first half. Converse (2-0) answered with a goal from Holley Wisner at 32:33 to send both teams into halftime tied at 1-1.
Joy Keith gave Converse its first lead of the night at 2-1 with a goal 13 minutes into the second half. The Valkyries maintained their lead over the next 22 minutes until Barber broke the Mountain Lions' scoring drought with her second strike of the night, tying the match at 2-2 with less than nine minutes remaining in the period. Neither team was able to pick up the go-ahead goal in regulation and the contest went into overtime.
Keith managed to find the back of the net for a second time just 2:53 into overtime to give Converse the 3-2 victory.
