URBANA, Ohio – Two second-half goals proved to be too much to overcome as the Concord University women's soccer team lost 2-0 at Urbana in Mountain East Conference play Tuesday afternoon.
"Give Urbana credit they scored on their opportunities and we didn't," Head Coach Stefani Workman said. "This conference is tough and we need to learn how to win on the road if we want to be at the top. Moving forward we have to be prepared mentally and physically for 90 minutes to win games."
The loss drops Concord's record to 3-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in MEC play. Urbana improves to 2-5-1 overall and 2-2-0 in conference play with the victory.
Concord and Urbana were tied in corner kicks at 3-3 with Urbana holding an 18-15 advantage in total shots. Both schools put nine shots on goal.
Sophomore forward
Kari Simon led Concord with four shots, all of which were on goal. Junior back
Abby Barber, junior midfielder
Sami Spertzel and freshman forward
Emily Cole tallied two shots apiece.
Freshman goalie
Kristin Twomey (3-2-1) stopped six shots in the loss.
The opening 45 minutes was a scoreless back-and-forth contest that saw Concord take eight shots, six of which were on goal, with Simon leading the way with three attempts. Twomey helped keep the game scoreless with four saves in the opening half.
However, the tie, and Twomey's shutout, was broken up when Urbana's Adriana Sayers scored an unassisted goal by beating Twomey high in the 61st minute to give the Blue Knights a 1-0 lead over the Mountain Lions.
Urbana pushed its lead to 2-0 at 70:57 thanks to a successful penalty kick by Brittany Mazzu. Concord continued its attack, but shots by Cole and sophomore back
Chloe Barber were stopped by Urbana goalie Taylor Gianangeli in the final 20 minutes and UU went on to secure the two-score win.
Concord will finish its four-game road trip 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Wheeling Jesuit in MEC competition.
