LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Concord University volleyball team split a pair of matches on day one of the LHU Classic in Lock Haven, Pa. Friday. The Mountain Lions lost to host Lock Haven, 3-0, but salvaged the day by regrouping to defeat Ohio Valley, 3-0.
The split keeps Concord's record one match above the .500 mark at 6-5 on the season. Lock Haven improved to 6-3 with its win over the Mountain Lions while Ohio Valley fell to 2-6 after being swept in straight sets by Concord.
The Mountain Lions kept their match against Lock Haven close in all three sets, losing by scores of 25-16, 25-20, 25-21. However, the Maroon and Gray could not stop LHU's Megan Flick, who totaled 16 kills for the Eagles.
Concord was paced in the opener by juniors
Brytni Willis and
Sarah Jones. Willis recorded a team-high seven kills while Jones blocked five shots in addition to her five kills. Senior
Jasmin Sutherland also had a solid match up front with three blocks of her own.
Junior
Lindsey Smith came away with 13 digs and junior
Nikki McMillan served two aces to go with eight assists.
In its afternoon match against Ohio Valley, Concord was able to take the first set in relative ease with a 25-15 win before two tight 25-21 wins in both the second and third sets over their former conference foes.
Willis and Jones were once again CU's driving force offensively, both players rattled off 11 kills to tie for the match high. Willis also had 14 digs, earning her second double-double of the season.
Just as impressive was the play of freshman
Lauren Richardson, who matched a personal best with seven blocks in the victory. Jones followed Richardson's lead by chipping in four blocks of her own.
Other standouts in the OVU match included Sutherland with nine kills, McMillan with a match-high 16 assists and Smith's 15 digs and two aces. Smith has now recorded at least 10 digs in a match in three out of Concord's last four contests.
Concord returns to action Saturday with matches against the University of Sciences at 9:00 a.m. and Dominican at 2:00 p.m.
