ATHENS, W. Va. – The Concord University volleyball team opened up its 2013 home schedule Wednesday night with a pair of victories, defeating Bluefield State 3-1 and West Virginia Tech 3-0 at the Carter Center. The victories improve Concord's record to 5-4 overall this season.
The Mountain Lions downed rival Bluefield State 25-10, 23-25, 25-9, 25-8 in the afternoon match before returning in the evening to best West Virginia Tech in straight sets 25-8, 25-12, 25-14. Head coach
Kate Southcott is now a combined 7-0 against the two schools all-time.
Concord was led in its victory over Bluefield by junior
Sarah Jones and freshman
Lauren Richardson. Jones had 12 kills while Richardson tallied six blocks (three solo / three assisted).
Senior
Jasmin Sutherland added five blocks and eight kills and junior
Brytni Willis just missed a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs. Junior
Lindsey Smith made a match-high 12 digs.
The setting duo of
Amanda Walker and
Nikki McMillan registered 19 and 15 assists, respectively, vs. the Lady Blues.
The nightcap saw the Mountain Lions once again come out hot as they rolled to the 3-0 sweep of West Virginia Tech in commanding fashion. As a team, Concord had recorded a .366 attack percentage.
Willis, Jones and Sutherland led the way for Concord against the Golden Bears with kill totals of 13, seven and six. In addition to her six kills, Sutherland also posted three blocks. Jones, Richardson and senior
Rebecca Lovejoy all tallied two blocks apiece.
Walker had a match-best 21 assists in what was her second contest of the season with at least 20 assists.
The Mountain Lions return to action this weekend with four matches at the LHU Classic in Lock Haven, Pa. Concord will face Ohio Valley and Lock Haven on Friday before finishing the weekend Saturday against the University of Sciences and Dominican.
