SCOUTING THE MOUNTAIN LIONS
• After defeating West Virginia State 36-3 in week two to improve its record to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in MEC play, Concord received 12 votes in this week's National Football Coaches Association Top-25 poll (up from five two weeks ago).
• Saturday's game between the Mountain Lions and Bulldogs will be the first meeting in series history between the two schools.
• The Concord defense is once again ranked with the nation's best in several categories. After back-to-back impressive performances to start the season, CU is slotted second in the country in forced turnovers (nine), fifth in points allowed per game (6.5), sixth in third down conversion defense (17.9 percent), eighth in passing yards allowed per game (110.5) and 15th in total yards allowed per game (254.5).
• Individually, senior linebacker
Jake Lilly still leads the nation in forced fumbles with four while also ranking sixth in total tackles at 26 after back-to-back 13-tackle games.
• Lilly, who also intercepted a pass against West Virginia State, now sits third on Concord's career tackles list (285). He trails former Mountain Lions Mike Spradling (316 tackles) and Darryl Wilson (386 tackles) for second and first place.
• Sophomore wide receiver
Tiko Henderson has quickly established himself as Concord's go-to receiver. Through two games, Henderson leads CU with 10 receptions for 202 yards (20.2 yards per catch) and one touchdown. He is coming off of a five-catch, 143-yard performance vs. West Virginia State that included an 86-yard touchdown.
• The 86-yard connection from redshirt freshman quarterback
Brian Novak to Henderson is tied for the longest passing play by Concord since Tyler Hull and Ken Stallings hooked up for a 97-yard reception in 2000.
• Three of Concord's touchdowns against West Virginia State were firsts for Mountain Lions players.
• Sophomore wide receiver
D.J. Holmes hauled in his first collegiate TD reception on a 36-yard pass from redshirt freshman tight end
Dalton Brindo. In addition to the trick touchdown pass, Brindo also caught the first three passes of his career Saturday.
• Senior cornerback
Riyahd Richardson picked up the first pick-six of his career with a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown. The INT was the 11th of Richardson's career, the fourth most in CU history. Richardson also moved into first place all-time for Concord in career passes defensed at 40.
• Redshirt freshman
Sam Wright got into the end zone for the first time on a one-yard rush.
• As is the case with any dominant defense, the Mountain Lions have already seen significant contributions from a number of players this season.
• Junior defensive lineman
Will Greathouse made a career-high four tackles for loss against W. Va. State.
• Senior defensive back
Davon Marion intercepted his first pass of 2013 against West Virginia State. He currently ranks third on the team in tackles with 15 and first in passes defensed at two.
• Sophomore defensive end
Ervin Moore racked up the second two-sack game of his career against West Virginia State. Four of Moore's eight tackles this season have been for a loss.
• Senior safety
Josh Clark joins Lilly, Marion and Richardson with one interception.
• Sophomore linebacker
Austin Dotson is second in tackles with 16.
• Offensively, Novak is set to make his third start of the season. Through two games, Novak has thrown for 426 yards and two touchdowns.
• In addition to Henderson, Novak's favorite targets have been junior
Darrick Williams (seven receptions for 90 yards) and sophomore fullback
Shaun Workinger (four catches for 48 yards and one touchdown).
• Running backs
Calvinaugh Jones and Wright are primed for breakout games after facing two tough rush defenses to start the season.
• Jones has rushed for 76 yards on 30 attempts, Wright has gained 45 yards on 21 attempts and Novak has proven to be a threat out of the pocket with 34 yards on the ground.
• Junior defensive back
DeShon Marman has returned four kickoffs for 99 yards, an average of 24.8 yards per return.
• Sophomore punter
Andrew Huska effectively nullifies Concord's opponent's return game. He leads the MEC in touchbacks and is third in the league punting average.
